Jayhawks to reunite for Basilica Block Party

jayhawks.jpgThe Jayhawks are listing the Basilica Block Party in Minneapolis as one of two dates they will play this summer. They’re down to perform July 10 at the big church bash, the full lineup for which has yet to be announced. Undoubtedly, both Mark Olson and Gary Louris will be fronting the band for the show, as Louris has said he didn’t want to do any “Jayhawks”-billed shows without his old/current duet partner. Their other date, by the way, is in Barcelona on May 30. Their only previous reunion gig was in Spain last summer, with the ‘95-era lineup also featuring Karen Grotberg, Tim O’Reagan and co-founder Marc Perlman. The Olson-less Jayhawks last played the Basilica in 2003.

It’s good to hear the Basilica party is even on this year, what with the often-competing Day of Music at Orchestra Hall now officially canceled. I’m happy to report that the Current and Walker Art Center are still putting on another Rock the Garden bash this year, too (June 20). Look for the official lineup announcement for that on Wednesday.

I give ‘em two years and they’ll be Soul Asylum part deux, playing any local American Legion or birthday party that will give them a check….

I highly doubt it, but I’d be fine with that. I’ve enjoyed the hell out of Soul Asylum’s gigs these past few years.

Sounds good but it is too bad there was not a better venue available.

Last one I went to was the Summit outdoor show a few years ago…have they started playing material pre-Grave Dancers? If so I will give them another try….they’ve ignored the existence of their Twin Tone days for way too long.

I saw Soul Asylums drummer play with Prince on Leno last Thursday! And theier bass player also plays with Guns n’Roses and used to be in the Replacements! TRUE!

Anyway, this is about the Jayhawks. That will be cool. I saw Louris & Olson at treehouse in store recently and it was fun. Basillica Block Party can be cool with the right band. The Suburbs were great there.

Take a look Rood Dog: http://blogs2.startribune.com/blogs/poplife/2008/12/21/soul-asylum-at-first-ave/

Setlist from December’s show at First Ave. A decent amount of pre GDU songs. Of course you’d already know this if you have been to a Soul Asylum show in the last 5 years. It sounds like you saw them after “Candy From a Stranger” was released, they played one pre GDU song and you’ve held a grudge ever since. Of course I could be wrong.

I too have been very happy seeing Soul Asylum a number of times in the past 4 years. Maybe The Jayhawks should reunite and tour the Twin Cites with Soul Asylum…..i would be there in a second.

No, no…like I said I saw them at the Summit Brewery thing on Harriet Island…that was September 2006 coincided with the last studio album and they didn’t play anything old….albeit they only played for about 50-60 minutes. That set list from First Ave over the holidays looks pretty good….although I don’t know what they have against “Sometime To Return”. I will have to check them out at the Zoo this summer and see what they’ve got to offer….

RD-Ahhhh, the perfect storm of suckdum for a fan of an established band that wants to hear old stuff; 50 min set + festival + new CD = only new stuff and the radio hits.
Seriously, check them out at a club gig. You will be plesantly surprised and eagerly anticipating the next show. And they usually play Sometime to Return.

Do we have any predictions for the Rock the Garden lineup?
