Morrissey bare-chested and barely 90 minutes at State

Hey Moz, thanks for leaving us a couple of your shirts, and a few good insults to go with it. As you can read in my full print review (click here to see it), I thought these displays of personality were the best part of the show, but many of the new and/or heavier songs also came off well. Quite a few tunes didn’t, though, including “How Could Anybody Possibly Know…,” “Let Me Kiss You” and “Sorry Doesn’t Help.” I’m especially curious what you diehards thought of the set list. “Life Is a Pigsty” was an interesting addition — he dedicated it to a friend who died in London on Monday, and he genuinely seemed down in its delivery. And not just the showy kind of sad. Here’s the whole list of songs.
This Charming Man / Billy Budd / Black Cloud / How Soon Is Now? / Irish Blood, English Heart / When Last I Spoke to Carol / How Could Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel? / I Keep Mine Hidden / Let Me Kiss You / Seasick, Yet Still Docked / That’s How People Grow Up / Death of a Disco Dancer / The Loop / Something Is Squeezing My Soul / The World Is Full of Crashing Bores / I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris / Sorry Doesn’t Help / Ask / Life Is a Pigsty / I’m OK by Myself ENCORE: First of the Gang to Die

I saw the set list that was thrown into the crowd as a paper airplane. The top of the paper listed the venue as being in “Fannyapolis” not “Funnyapolis”. If you know your British slang, it makes the name a lot more humorous.
I’d never heard much of the Smiths or of Morrissey until my son invited me to attend the concert with him Monday eve. I found it a very good concert, music-wise and highly entertaining. Especially exciting (though a bit brutal) was watching the stage bouncers literally tossing people off the stage when they presumably attempted to get a piece of the frontliner, et al., and the way Morrissey played his microphone cord like an instrument itself. (He also pulled up his jeans a lot!) I liked a lot of the guitar work; the classical bass and the accordian were nice additions to the band’s sound & added style. The drummer was excellent and I loved the gong! Very cool. I didn’t particularly like all of the music, songs, etc. - but the harmonizing was good despite some of the redundancy and U2-like penchant for keeping the same basic sound, over and over again. I’m glad I attended!
It’s “Something Is Squeezing My Skull” not “Soul.” The concert rocked. Morrissey is a music god.
Chris failed to report how the opening band, The Courteeners were. Also upon reporting the people who talked into the mic he missed the BEST one! After Moz handed the mic to a gal that said “we love you unconditionally” Morrissey also stated he needed to find a more lovely voice and handed the mic to a girl who said, “Moz” and he replied with “yes?” and she stated…”hows the baby?” and there was some laughter and he said, “why you laugh? I take my baby very seriously” Also the reporter failed to talk about the stage invaders towards the end and how the security guard did a football tackle to a guy off the stage and onto the floor.
Yes quite a violent ending to a fast paced set,but if you you know the moz’s shows thats pretty much the norm everbody trying to get a hug or whatever.I thought the set list was great, the band was tight, you could’nt ask for more except for the encore was a jip only 1 song and after all this time. Appreciation isn’t rewarded when ya got a train to catch or a check to cash. P.S. I heard “Fannyapolis” and I was in the balcony, If you’re gonna cover music ya gotta take out your earpugs !
I’ve seen Morrissey five times (have traveled to Milwaukee for the last two shows — SO thankful he decided to hit Minneapolis again) and my first inclination is to say this was the best performance I’ve seen. He really rocked it, which is no surprise considering “Years of Refusal” is his best, most charged album since 1992’s “Your Arsenal.”
I’m a diehard, so I really hate to criticize any songs, but “Life is a Pigsty” is not my favorite. That was the only song on the setlist I could have done without. I could have helped him pick out any dozen of other songs that would have been a fitting tribute to his friend.
I normally do not like to see Morrissey play his “slower” songs live, but this time around I was completely entranced by “Disco Dancer” and “Seasick, Yet Still Docked.”
