Andrew Bird’s MN flock soars at the State

Pretty powerful show from Bird and his all-MN band at the State Theatre last night, I thought, as you can read in the full review at www.startribune.com/music. Bird’s the kind of performer I can totally get why some people can’t stand the guy, because he is so quirky and sometimes melodramatic on stage and the music sometimes simply tries too hard. But I’m always glad I’m not one of those people anytime I see him myself.
Mr. Bird was pretty dang funny throughout the set, too, including his line as Mike Lewis brought up his Happy Apple instrument of choice for “Anonanimal”: “I swore I’d never have sax with a member of my band.” His introduction of “Effigy” and “Oh No” was also entertaining, as he explained they’re both about “the guy who sites at the end of the bar making uninvited conversation with all the guests, and maybe draws fantasy art about the wait staff.” Yeah, I think we’ve all encountered that guy. Here’s the set list:
Self-Torture (solo) / Masterswarm / Fitz & Dizzyspells / A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left / Natural Disaster / Effigy / Oh No / Nomenclature / Armchairs / Anonanimal / Imitosis / Scythian Empire (w/ Haley Bonar) / Dr. Stringz / Fake Palindromes
ENCORE 1: Why? (solo) / Tables and Chairs / Don’t Be Scared ENCORE 2: Weather Systems (solo)
