Great two-fer tonight at the Varsity Theater

A band I’ve been preaching the gospel of for a few years now, the Detroit Cobras, are on a double-bill tonight at the Varsity with the Dex Romweber Duo. The Cobras are a soulful, semi-punky garage-rock band (actually from Detroit… God help them!) with a gifted howler of a frontwoman, Rachel Nagy. Their four albums — two on Bloodshot, and two with Sympathy for the Record Industry – feature old and obscure blues, soul, R&B and country songs originated by the likes of Percy Sledge, Irma Thomas, Leadbelly and a lot of acts that you (and I) have never heard of. Dex Romweber, is the former frontman of influential North Carolina twang-rock band the Flat Duo Jets. His duo features his sister Sara (Lets Active) on drums. They just recorded some tracks with longtime fan Jack White producing that will soon be issued as a 7-inch.
Showtime is 9 p.m. Cover is $13.
