Tony Bennett @ Mystic Lake Casino

It was Mother’s Day, so, of course, I’m letting my mom speak first. Good show, she says, but she liked Tony Bennett’s last Mystic Lake show in 2007 better.
Sorry, Mom, I disagree. This one was superior because the band was more effective (she agreed the musicians took more solos) largely because regular pianist Lee Musiker was on board; in 2007, Bennett had a sub who was playing only his fourth gig with the singer.
The 2007 set was longer (by three songs) but Bennett, 82, was in remarkably strong voice on Sunday. I preferred that his daughter, Antonia, did her three selections at the beginning of the set rather than in the middle, as she did last time. One disappointment: Tony didn’t sing “Fly Me to the Moon.”
Here is what he sang: 1. Someone Who Cares Like Me 2. They All Laughed 3. Maybe This Time 4. Speak Low 5. Cold, Cold Heart 6. I Got Rhythm 7. Just the Way You Look Tonight 8. Sing You Sinners 9. But Beautiful 10. Just in Time 11. Boulevard of Broken Dreams 12. The Best Is Yet to Come 13. For Once in My Life 14. The Shadow of Your Smile 15. The Good Life 16. I Left My Heart in San Francisco 17. Steppin Out with My Baby 18. Who Cares As Long As You Care for Me 19. In a Mellow Tone 20. It Don’t Mean a Thing 21. Just a Little Street Where My Old Friends Meet 22. How Do You Keep the Music Playing
What did you think of the show?

I agree with you. I saw the show two years ago and thought he was incredible. My family is a close friend of drummer Harold Jones so it’s always nice to have him up here in MN.
We agee that the piano playing of Lee is much better than anyone could be with Tony. The band is playing very tight right now. (That is what Harold said before the show too).
The dynamic range of all the musicians was “spine-tingling”. It brings out Tony Bennett’s range so well.
See you when he comes back!
