Don’t be disappointed if you missed this one on Thursday night. Just go watch the DVD (or the PBS broadcast) of the Eric Clapton/Steve Winwood reunion last year at NYC’s Madison Square Garden. They were fresh and fiery. That was not the case at the X.

Clapton was more satisfying in his last two X performances in ‘06 and ‘04. Winwood was even better opening for Tom Petty at the X last year. There were some magical moments Thursday, including After Midnight and Tough Luck as well as Clapton’s acoustic work on Driftin and How Long.

This reunion concert was not about celebrating the two stars’ various solo hits but rather collaborating on interpretations of the blues, songs identified with one another and, of course, tunes from their 1969 supergroup Blind Faith.

Here is what they played:

1. Had to Cry Today (Blind Faith) 2. Low Down 3. After Midnight 4. Presence of the Lord (Blind Faith) 5. Sleeping in the Ground (unreleased Blind Faith) 6. Glad (Traffic) 7. Well Alright (Blind Faith) 8. Tough Luck Blues 9. Pearly Queen (Traffic) 10. Crossroads 11. No Face No Name No Number (Winwood) 12. Forever Man  13. Georgia on My Mind (Winwood solo on B3) 14. Driftin (acoustic) 15. How Long (acoustic) 16. Layla (acoustic) 17. Can’t Find My Way Home (Blind Faith, acoustic) 18. Split Decision 19. Voodoo Chile (Hendrix song on which Winwood played on original recording ENCORE 20. Cocaine 21. Dear Mr. Fantasy (Traffic)

Cant wait for your review of the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus.
Keep up the good work.

This was possibly the best concert of the many I have seen (I go back to ‘69 for my first concert). I truly appreciate the contributions these two artists have made. Any shortcomings might be attributed to the lack of appreciation by the listener or perhaps I was fortunate to have lived the music.
