I hate this song!

“Walking on a Dream” by new Aussie duo Empire of the Sun, which I swear I hear everytime I turn on the Current nowadays. It sounds like a limp MGMT rip-off (the all-too-obvious comparison) meshed with cheesy 80s piano-pop like Christopher Cross or the “Greatest American Hero” TV theme. The rest of EOTS’s disc is pretty much all the same and equally unimpressive. I always thought co-Emperor Luke Steele’s previous band, the Sleepy Jackson, was also quite overrated. Here’s hoping this one fades even faster.

Of all the bands in the world (at least the electro-synth-rock ones) how did MGMT get so huge? #17 in the Pazz & Jop poll seems absurdly high for a band that has 2 1/2 good songs and hardly play their own instruments. Then we get EOTS, who dress up like Siegfried & Roy and expect to be taken seriously. It’s sad that MGMT are working with Paul McCartney, while a great band like Cut Copy toils away in (relative) obscurity.
Is this going to be a weekly feature? If so, when can we anticipate a Cage the Elephant installment?
Indeed. Get this s#it off my radio.
i’ll admit that song is sort of a guilty pleasure, but i wouldn’t say it’s good either.
i actually ADORED that first Sleepy Jackson album tho, and they were really good live opening for My Morning Jacket at the Ascot years ago.
far as I know it’s not his previous band, this is just a side project.
but re: MGMT, a few good songs, insanely overhyped, and annoying/lame live show, i’m with you Mac, how the hell they get to open for Paul is beyond me.
as for Cage The Elephant, ditto on that. There’s better stuff on the record at least, but Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked is super annoying and sounds like a G. Love rehash.
I actually dig the Cage the Elephant record and even that song, but I’ve tired of over-hearing that on the Current, too. They’re also going to make me tire of that Grizzly Bear record soon enough.
glad I don’t really listen to the Current more than an hour a week or so when i’m in my car ![]()
So much hype around MGMT, I picked up the record last week because it was on sale. Thought I was missing something. NOT! Empire of the Sun is godawful. As bad as some spoof band you’d see on an SNL skit or something.
