After playing with a 4th of July orchestra Saturday in Red Wing, Rosanne Cash played it loose with hubby/guitarist John Leventhal on Sunday at the Dakota.
She forgot the words in the middle of the first song and rolled with the punches for 85 minutes. She answered requests (someone asked for “Heart Like a Wheel,” which Cash said was Linda Ronstadt’s but she knew the stuff and later played her own “The Wheel”) and bantered with the crowd (”did you watch Wimbledon? Whew!”) and her husband (who kept plugging all the guests on her upcoming CD, “The List,” including Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Jeff Tweedy, Neko Case and Rufus Wainwright).
Cash did several songs from “The List” (which draws material from a list of 100 essential country songs that Johnny Cash gave his first-born child when she turned 18), a few from 2006’s “Black Cadillac” (her most recent album), a few of her early favorites and many covers (some from “The List,” some not).
Cash was in good spirits but her voice sounded a little nasally at times. Here is what she played Sunday; perhaps the set list will change for Monday.
