Jamie Foxx @ Target Center

The show was better than I expected. Jamie Foxx is a very good balladeer (sweet voice, sexy falsetto) and an instinctive entertainer, who was more spontaneous than a summer’s worth of arena performers (like the comic he is, he can ad lib).

But, frankly, with a few exceptions, his material is generic. And he didn’t know how to project arena stage moves to be more commanding on the party bangers.

Considering that Foxx is better known for his acting and comedy than for his two platinum albums and handful of R&B hits, the audience was so sparse — 3,000 was the announced attendance — that the evening felt like the musical equivalent of a Lynx game. (My full review is at http://www.startribune.com/entertainment/music/51534777.html?elr=KArksLckD8EQDUoaEyqyP4O:DW3ckUiD3aPc:_Yyc:aUycaEacyU)

I didn’t compile a complete set list but here are most of the things Foxx did during his 105 minutes onstage:

Preview for his movie Skank Robbers/video clips of his movies/Number One/I Don’t Need It/Sweet Dreams (Eurythmics)/Digital Girl/Slow Jamz/Do Me Baby (Prince)/Unpredictable/What’d I Say (Ray Charles)/I Got a Woman (Ray Charles)/Gold Digger/Extravaganza/Storm/DJ Play a Love Song/(brought four women onstage to bump and grind before doing) Slow/Freak n Me/Overdose/Michael Jackson medley played by DJ Irie with Jamie doing Jacko-like dances/I Don’t Know/Obama impression/She Got Her Own/Just Like Me/Blame It
