Kanye was right! Lady Gaga is so wrong!!

Not exactly a shocker statement to make: Beyonce did deserve to win over Taylor Swift last night. Granted, they’re both pinup stars who make us forget their weak singing voices by being incredibly soft on the eyes — hence, they’re the perfect MTV stars – but that Beyonce video was truly killer. That Swift video? Utterly forgettable.

I think MTV was clearly going for the suburban youth TV-viewing market by crowning Taylor over the B-Girl. I applaud Kanye for pointing out the obvious. Of course, he probably just did it for his own benefit — let’s face it, Mr. West has been slipping from the headlines of late — but he was still in the right. By the same token, don’t feel bad for Ms. Swift: She’s getting a lot of publicity and sympathy-vote attention out of this, too. Click here if you haven’t yet seen the clip of him crashing the stage.

Now onto the real controversy: How in the world did Lady Gaga become the biggest star of the night? Having the backing of Perez Hilton is no match for having the talent of Paris Hilton. Her performance on the show was a comical Madonna-wannabe send-up, and her many costume changes just reeked of being desparate for attention. No wonder Kanye likes her, too.

Don’t you have better things to comment on than this? This is MTV, not the Grammys. And why defend a d-bag like Kanye West? The guy used his mother’s death last year to promote himself and win a Grammy. Where’s the outrage on that?

I agree with Jeff, even though he spells his name funny, why are you defending Kanye West? It’s time for him to go away….I’m sure there’s a cruise ship somewhere that could use a washed up hack like him. Dj J G

I don’t care if Kanye was right or wrong, our society is turning out a bunch of people that only think of themselves and do or say what they want, when they want and think everyone else should care or cater to them. Let’s walk all over anyone who happens to be in our way at the time. We’re a “more me NOW” society and it’s sad.

That Beyonce video was mediocre at best (granted the Taylor Swift one wasn’t any better). Its only real redeeming quality is that it is easily spoof-able. Maybe they should have given the award to Timberlake. His version is the better one, anyways.

The best music videos don’t get anywhere close to being played on MTV.

I agree with you Pam. Our society today is sick, selfish, discourteous, angry, and nobody has any ethics or morals anymore. I hate to think what it’s going to be like in 5-10 years. :(

We can blame MTV, VH1 and reality TV for the way this generation acts.
It’s all trash. They watch and learn that it’s okay to say what ever you want to someone no matter how bad it hurts. It’s all about “ME, ME, ME”……. “MORE ME NOW”!

The country is being destroyed….and why?……..for the all mighty dollar!

Lock out MTV and VHI on your cable box so your kids can’t watch. I did. Start with those two.

Kanye West was “in the right?” You are out of your mind. Don’t feel bad for Taylor Swift because even though she was robbed of a major moment for a young star, she’s going to get sympathy vote attention? Lately it seems that you have become jaded and cynical about mainstream music, or anyone who becomes too popular. I’m not even a Taylor Swift fan and I’m angry about what happened.

I used to really respect your opinions, but your comments here are beyond ridiculous. Do you honestly think the country needs Kanye West (or you, for that matter) to point out that MTV is going for a suburban youth TV-viewing market? Frankly, who even sees these videos on MTV any more? The only place you can see any of them is on YouTube or at 4AM on MTV.

You’d be better off defending the Congressman who shouted “liar” during Obama’s speech instead of the drunken, spotlight-stealing, loudmouth, self-absorbed, questionably talented idiot that Kanye West has become…

VMAs have become mostly an opportunity for exposure, be it Kanye’s ego (he wasn’t booked on the show but he wanted face time to remind you that he and Lady Gaga have a tour this fall), Gaga’s narcissism, Pink’s tumbling (and pastie, the Twilight franchise or MTV’s breathlessly vapid VJs. Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong got it right, once again urging MTV to program more videos and less “reality” shows.

although I don’t agree with Mr. West’s approach, I think he did have a valid point - Beyonce did have a great video. Swifts was boring and the same thing. Plus, it’s COUNTRY! When did MTV support country?? She’s got AMC for that. My question is, where did all the good videos go? Closer, Vogue, November Rain, Fell In Love With a Girl, Weapon of Choice, Sabotage, anything Michael Jackson or Missy Elliot did, Bjork Videos, Around The World (by Daft Punk), California Love, Wicked Game, Tonight Tonight, Drop (by Pharcyde), Coffee and Tv, Criminal, Take on Me, Virtual Insanity (my personal favorite). These singers call themselfs “artists,” but their videos show anything but artistic. just a thought

Sorry, but “desparate for attention” goes to the MTV network itself. And Kanye needs to go join Mom.

Kanye has more talent in his pinky finger than that hack Taylor Swift. Let’s see: Doesn’t write her own songs, doesn’t produce the music for her songs, can’t sign particularly well, but shes pretty! She is no different than Britney Spears.

you “applaud Kanye” ?!?! are you serious?? When did narcissism become a commendable trait? kanye is a spoiled, egotistical twit because of people like you…always saying “yes” when you should be saying “no.”

Dude, check your facts before posting. Taylor Swift writes most of her songs.

Kevin MN-

Taylor Swift does write her own songs. Yes, her video is no better or worse than Beyonce’s. But Taylor Swift’s music is so popular that Kanye is considering stealing from it for his next album.

The G Man says:

In response to Kevin MN…

Taylor Swift wrote almost every one of the songs on her two albums, is the best selling artist of 2009 (selling twice what Kanye did), got a publishing deal at age 14, and has made country music mainstream again. People actually like her for her music, not for manufactured controversy. She stays out of the tabloids, and unlike Britney Spears, has a role-model worthy approach to fame.

Kanye West, on the other hand, sells fewer records with each new release, sold half as much as Swift in 2009, is an appallingly grating egomaniac and fame-whore, and is auto-tuned to death on his latest album. His appearance on American Idol earlier this year was embarrassingly amateurish and painfully off-key. His obnoxious grandstanding and “bad boy” behavior (dressing like a slob and drinking from a bottle of cognac on the red carpet, claiming he should have won awards, that awards shows are racist or that HE should be the center of attention, always — really, how old are you?) has much more in common with Britney than anything Taylor Swift has ever done.

Shawn Bradley Guy says:

If this was the first time Kanye did this, I would accept your article a little bit more…even though I would still disagree. However, he’s pulled this act about 3-4 times now at award shows. He’s got a problem whether drugs/alcohol…or simply just attention. He’s a first class idiot.

Jane says:

Well, i don’t watch the VMAs. But i volunteer with kids who watch their stars like Kayne West closely. . . and I wonder why kids are rude and out of control. . . even little kids? This is their role model? God help us. Keep giving me reasons to cancel my subscription and don’t forget, we dead tree readers pay your salary

This was a post just to see how many people read Pop Life and are willing to respond, right?

Right?

I’ve never seen either video, don’t watch MTV (do they play videos any more? Are they really even relevant at all to creative music any more?) or the VMAs, and don’t listen to Swift or Beyonce. That’s not the point. But I did see a clip of Kanye’s idiocy. Chris, regardless of your opinion of which video is better, you REALLY just defended that behavior? REALLY? You “applaud” him? I see you at shows. I read every word you write because of your thoughtful analysis of the local scene. But, you just dropped several notches in my book. Rethink it dude. Write a retraction or a clarification or something. Don’t applaud thug behavior.

Chris Riemenschneider says:

The guy went about it in an asinine way, no question, but I think it was a glaring enough “injustice” — definitely an overdramatic word for something really so trivial — that it merited some kind of reaction from somebody. Kanye went about it the wrong way, but his point was right. All I’m saying.

Andy Slash, you were about half-right: The bosses “suggested” I write about this to-do on the blog. I was actually hoping NOBODY would react to the post, proving them it was a waste of my time, but that didn’t work. Dammit.

HoodRat says:

Well, OK then, Chris. Just like Kanye, I’ll let this one slide, even though your haircut ain’t nearly as cool!

Michael Benedict says:

I’d like to see Kanye Left bumrush the stage when 50 Cent or JZ win an award. He’s got a knack for stealing the spot light from comedians and 110 pound female country singers. He is just annoying and doesn’t know how to act in public. What a d-bag!

Michael says:

September 17th, 2009 at 7:23 am

They’re obviously going for the younger audience when their big promotion is a preview of the new Twilight movie. Disclosure: I haven’t watched the VMA’s since about 1999 when music was still a relevant part of MTV but I did see this on a commercial for them. ;)

OK… I’m not even sure if anyone is still reading this thread, but I had to take a sec to correct this guy…

1: “but that Beyonce video was truly killer”
HAHAHAHA! Tell me how Beyonce and two women dancing on screen in b/w is original.
2: “he talent of Paris Hilton”
Open your ears next time Gaga sings any song LIVE. Are you just mad that she doesn’t Auto-tune her voice like your boy Kanye????
3: “costume changes just reeked of being desparate for attention”
Yes, the costumes are an attention-grab, that’s the point. EVERY popular music star has their own gimmick. Talent isn’t enough for most of today’s “3 second attention span” generation.

4: “Madonna-wannabe send-up”
Heaven forbid that she emulates an idol of hers, because we all know that no one else has EVER done that (One example: Timberlake & Usher TOTALLY on Jacko’s jock; not hating, just stating)

Oh, Kevin MN…
“Kanye has more talent in his pinky finger than that hack Taylor Swift. Let’s see: Doesn’t write her own songs, doesn’t produce the music for her songs, can’t sign particularly well”
LOL!
1.Kanye doesn’t create half the beats he calls his (Even Dre did it, people. Ghost producers are everywhere)
2.Kanye has NO lyrical talent…
3. Kanye can’t sing AT ALL, but still tries!
