Stars to celebrate Willie’s Guitars 20th

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

On 9/9/09 at the Cabooze, Willie’s American Guitars of St. Paul will celebrate its 20th anniversary with an all-star benefit concert. David Hidalgo and Louie Perez of Los Lobos and Joe Ely are confirmed. Many locals, including Molly Maher, will also perform.

The evening is a benefit for a musicians’ health fund at Springboard for the Arts, Brianna’s Gift (a children’s cancer fund) and Salvation Army food drive.

Sexton back in Dylan’s band

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

Guitarist Charlie Sexton will apparently be returning to Bob Dylan’s touring band this fall. The website austin360.com reports that Texas slinger Sexton, who played with Dylan from 1999-2003, will rejoin Dylan, starting Oct. 5. Word is that he’ll replace Denny Freeman in the band. There is no official announcement from Dylan.

Many Dylanophiles feel the band with Sexton and Larry Campbell (who nows tours with Levon Helm) was Dylan’s best in recent decades.

Sexton sat in for a half a set with Dylan’s band on Aug. 4 in Dell Diamond, a Texas minor-league ball park, and reportedly lit a fire under the keyboard-playing icon.

No word yet on any Minnesota Dylan dates for the fall on his Never Ending Tour.Â

Happy Birthday, Phil Lynott

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

phillynott.jpgThe Thin Lizzy frontman would’ve turned 60 today. Local Thin Lizzy tribute band Jailbreak – who won First Ave’s Cover Band contest years ago and often play St. Patty’s Day at the Triple Rock — aren’t letting the occasion go unmarked. You can catch them tonight at Lee’s Liquor Lounge (9:30 p.m., $5).

Art Brut’s “The Replacements”

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

artbrut.jpgreplacements-1987.jpg

I know the song’s edging on old-news locally, but I came across the full lyrics to Art Brut’s quirky and hilarious yet ultimately reverent tribute to the ‘Mats (Titled “The Replacements,” featured on the British band’s new album “Art Brut vs. Satan”), and I thought I’d go ahead and post them. For those who haven’t heard the song, click here.

So many bands are just putting it on / Why can’t they be the same as their songs? / I can’t help it, I’m so naïve / Another record with my heart on the sleeve / Is he as cool as he writes them? / Not always and hold that against him

I can’t believe I’ve only just discovered the Replacements / How have I only just found out about the Replacements? / Some of them are nearly as old as my parents / How have I only just found out about the Replacements? I want to love them but I’m can’t be sure / I’ve been let down so many times before / This time I really want to believe / Another record with my heart on the sleeve / I hope I’ve finally found a band / That’s not gonna let me downI can’t believe I’ve only just discovered the Replacements / How have I only just found out about the Replacements? / Some of them are nearly as old as my parents / How have I only just discovered the Replacements?Second hand records are cheaper / Reissue CDs, extra tracks / Second hand CDs are cheaper / Reissue CDs, extra tracks I can’t believe I’ve only just discovered the Replacements
Some of them are nearly the same age as my parents
I can’t believe I’ve only just discovered the Replacements

One thing I wonder is if Art Brut’s ‘07 tour with the Hold Steady was in any way the impetus for the song, or if the recent Rhino reissues were all that did it. Either way, I’d rate this one squarely between They Might Might Be Giants’ and Lucinda Williams’ previous songs about the band/Westerberg (Lucinda’s being the best of the batch). Still, you can’t top the “as old as my parents” line here.Â

Spend happy hour in the Pines

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

tremoloposter.jpgTo tout their sophomore record for Red House, “Tremolo” — which comes out today – the Pines will play a free in-store today at the Electric Fetus in Minneapolis (7 p.m., free). There will be equally good beer on tap, too: Flat Earth is a co-sponsor. The Pines’ big CD-release party isn’t until Oct. 23 at the Cedar.

The Fetus has another in-store Thursday (also 7 p.m.) with the Idle Hands and Magic Castles, part of its Minneconomy series.

Going Commandos tonight?

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

the_suicide_commandos.jpgAs they did last summer at the 331 Club, the former members of pioneering punk band the Suicide Commandos are getting back together tonight at the 331’s new downtown sibling the 501 Club. The show isn’t officially being billed as a Commandos reunion, and it will mostly be an unplugged gig, but all three guys will be there. Dave Ahl and Chris Osgood are supposed to kick it off as the Warblers around 8 p.m., followed by a set listed as “Steve Almaas and Friends” at 9. If you haven’t been to the 501 yet, click here for all its info. All the shows there are free.
