Girls’ basketball: Central still going to be No. 1

In Friday’s Pioneer Press, there was an interesting article on the St. Paul Central girls’ basketball team.
In it, Minutemen coach Willie Taylor said he is going to be happy when his team is not rated No. 1 when next season starts as it was this past season from start to finish.
Uh, one problem. Central is going to start the season as No. 1. I can virtually guarantee it. Sports writers are not that smart. They will look at a 32-0 team, considered by most observers as the best in state history, count 1-2-3-4, which is the number of starters coming back that Central has, and make the Minutemen No. 1.
Central pretty much dominated No. 2 Minneapolis South in the Class 4A title game. Sure, the Minutemen lose Angel Robinson and super sub Ebony Black, but six of Central’s top eight are back and they will probably pick up a few new players.
Who is going to be better? South has no size. Edina was young, but the Minutmen crushed the Hornets in the semifinals.
Unless Central loses a starter or two because of injuries/transfers or some other unexpected reason, Central is a clear No. 1 in next season’s preseason polls.
Sorry Willie.
