Play ball … or tennis or golf

After a week devoted to spring sports previews, it’s time to see some games and competition. If the weather cooperates.

About a year ago, I made a monumental, life-altering decision. If I am going to remain a prep reporter — and what else can I do? — I’m going to try and see the special athletes. The boys and girls who got on and make names for themselves in college and beyond. I want to see what they looked like in high school and guess how far they are going to go.

So here is my short list of athletes, I’d like to see this spring — trouble is spring sports seem to last about a month:

Baseball: Seth Rosin, Mounds View. He’s a 6-7, 230-pound pitcher who throws 90 mph. … Lakeville North catcher Mike Kvasnicka. He’s a three-sport athlete headed for the ‘U’ in baseball who committed as a junior.

Softball: Chaska lefthander Brynne Dordel. She strikes out two-hitters an inning. … Maple Grove’s Krista Lien. She slaps on softballs, gets on base and steals second and third. She has a unique talent.

Track and field: Hill-Murray’s B.J. Otto in the long jump. He might jump out of the sand pit some day. He is chasing the state all-time record in that event. … St. Paul Harding sprint sensation Sade Pollard. The junior has a shot at several state records.

Golf: Katie Detlefsen, the Minnehaha Academy senior can become the first golfer to win four state titles. She is the Tiger Woods of high school golf.

Up to now, I have seen Kvasnicka play quarterback once and I have seen Otto run the 100 and 200. He’s a good sprinter, too.

I have seen Dordel lose a game in the Class 3A state tournament. And the same weekend, I saw Lien and Maple Grove play.

That’s a start, but I have a lot more to do.

Tell me who you want to see or who I am missing from my must-see list of spring athletes.
