Valek won’t wrestle

Undefeated Scott West senior Tony Valek, who won a Class 2A state title at 135 pounds last year and is ranked No. 1 this year at 140, just told me he won’t be able to wrestle at state because of an injury.
He suffered a dislocated right elbow in practice Tuesday. His elbow is swollen and looks painful. When I met him here at the X, I shook his left hand. Doctors told him he might be sidelined for eight weeks.
“It’s disappointing,” he told me. “But hopefully the team will still do well.”
Scott West, which is ranked No. 5 among 2A teams, will face No. 10 Plainview-Elgin-Millville in Thursday’s quarterfinals at 7 p.m.
