Spring sports discussion

A lively debate has followed my latest On Preps column, in which I offered a plan to change the spring sports landscape as a way to lessen weather problems. (If you haven’t read it, click here.)
Many comments have been posted on startribune.com (you can do so at the bottom of the story) and I have received many emails, as well.
Two themes have emerged, both warranting discussion.
One argument is: “If golf moves to the fall, kids who go out for football/volleyball/cross-country won’t be able to play golf.” My response is: what about kids who want to play golf in the spring but also would like to compete in baseball or be on the track team? Moving golf to the fall doesn’t make things worse in this regard, it just changes the sports that might cause conflicts for kids.
The other argument concerns summer activities. As in, “If softball/baseball/lacrosse are played in the summer, kids won’t be able to play traveling softball/Legion baseball/club lacrosse/go on vacations, etc.” My response: we need to decide how important high school sports really is in Minnesota.
Your thoughts?

If weather is your only basis for wanting to change all of this I think you need to look past this one miserable spring. I’ve got no problem with April 15, give or take, as the start to the golf season. I would rather have the section and state tournaments contested in late May-early June than contested in the fall with far more unpredictable weather and worse course conditions in October. Anyone who plays fall golf knows that a lot of courses punch holes in their greens and trying to find your golf ball under layers of leaves is no picnic.
