Crosby-Ironton update

Crosby-Ironton, which finished second in last month’s Class 2A state boys’ basketball tournament, is facing an uncertain future with athletics and other activities. Due to financial problems, the district might go into the 2008-09 school year with no after-school activities.
But I spoke today with Crosby-Ironton superintendent Jaime Skjeveland, who was at a conference in Washington, D.C. He said the news might not be all bad, due to fundraising efforts intended to save the activities.
“If I had to predict, and I say this with a certain amount of uncertainty, I think we’re going to run full bore next year, I really do,” he told me.
No decisions will be made until sometime in May, Skjeveland said. That’s when the school board will have all the facts from various fundraising groups.
I asked him about the genesis of the problem, and he said there are two reasons: Funding from the state of Minnesota and declining enrollment. “A decade ago we were close to 1,600 students and now we’ve dropped below 1,200 kids,” he said.
I’ll continue to follow this story.
