Lacrosse, volleyball changes

High school lacrosse and volleyball will see some minor changes in their sports after action this morning by the MSHSL representative assembly.
The 64-person assembly, which represents schools of all sizes from all over the state, unanimously approved these changes:
–The maximum number of games volleyball teams can play in any regular-season tournament was raised from 12 to 15, putting Minnesota in line with bordering states. Also, volleyball teams will be allowed to play two matches in one day; this should help reduce travel costs and travel time.
–The length of the lacrosse season will go from nine to 11 weeks, allowing more flexibility in scheduling and dealing with inclement weather. This also means the number of regular-season games will go from 12 to 13.
The assembly discussed several other issues, including these:
–The possibility of moving some spring sports further into June as a way to solve weather-related problems. … the option of reducing the number of games in some sports as a way to combat increasing fuel/travel costs. … should the MSHSL academic bylaw (”making progress toward graduation”) be expanded to include specifics such as a 2.0 GPA or “no pass/no play”? … how can schools do more to convince the public to vote “yes” for school levies? … should students who attend virtual/home/charter schools be required to attend at least two classes in their local public school in order to be eligible for activities?
No decisions were made on any of these issues.Â
