Season best in shot put

I spent part of the day at the Class 2A, Section 1 track meet at Lakeville South. This was Day One of the competition, which will continue Saturday. Friday’s highlight (for me, an old thrower) came in the boys’ shot put.
In that event, Owatonna junior Casey Dehn finished with a winning throw of 61 feet, 9 1/2 inches. That is the best in the state this season, topping Dehn’s previous best of 60-2. Dehn will have lots of eyes on him during next week’s state track meet at Hamline, and track followers are already thinking about what he might do next season.
The state record is 65-6, set in 2003 by Mounds View’s Nate Englin. If things go right, Dehn could threaten that mark in 2009.
