August is here, and in the Land of Preps that means the return of high school sports is right around the bend. Practices for fall sports will begin one week from today, and we are making plans for another hectic, frantic, fun year.

Let’s hear your predictions for the fall. Which teams will finish on top? Which athletes will flash onto the scene?

We’re talking about football, cross-country, volleyball, soccer girls’ tennis and girls’ swimming and diving. That should be enough to keep us busy.

More stories please!! I like when you update the blog often, even if it seems like small bits. I really like the posts that cover the whole state! Even online only stories would be great!

Thanks for the note, WBT. Things are heating up and we’ll keep posting items here on the Insider. I’m with you; I love writing about the outstate teams as well as those in the metro. And don’t be surprised to see more online-exclusive stories in the future.

Any preseason rankings yet for football???

Nope, no football rankings are out yet. In many sports the polls are done by that sport’s coaches, which usually means they get them out quickly. Football polls are done by sports media from around the state, and it takes some time after practice starts for reporters to learn enough about the top teams to do their rankings. I’m not involved in the statewide polls (although I do put together the Strib’s Metro Top 10 during the season), so I don’t know when we will have football rankings. I would guess they should be released a week or 10 days before the season opens.
