Prep Bowl … discuss here

Posted on November 16th, 2008 – 12:46 PM
By John Millea

Let’s start the ball rolling with some questions …

–Can Blaine continue to slay giants and beat Wayzata?

–Can Northfield continue its amazing season and defeat Mankato West in a rematch of a Week 1 Scarlets victory?

–The 3A rematch from last year’s Prep Bowl is Glencoe-Silver Lake vs. DeLaSalle…who are you picking?

–Same story in 2A, where defending champ Caledonia and Luverne face off for the second year in a row. Who will win and why?

–New faces in the 1A title game: Royalton and Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg; predict the winner.

–And in Nine-man, everything keeps changing. Kittson County Central, the team that knocked off Stephen-Argyle in section play, lost to Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley 8-7 Saturday. C-G-B will meet Houston in the Prep Bowl. Let’s start the speculation.

Begin.

Wayzata 28-14 Trojans too tough on D.
West 21-20 Good rematch, but West is that good.
DeLaSalle 30-21 Upset, but I don’t think GSL is as good this year.
Luverne 40-20 Luverne has been best team all year and they get over the hump this year.
KMS 45-21 KMS on a guess
Houston 35-12 Houston on a guess

Big Guy - GSL is not as good? Their 1 loss came to previously #1 in 4A Orono…they have only given up 2 touchdowns in 5 playoff games including 2 shutouts.

I think the Panthers will dominate DLS again. Regardless of what your OR I think, it should be one entertaining game!

BigGuy says:

November 17th, 2008 at 10:10 am

I agree, I’m just picking the game. Where is Orono? Rankings mean nothing in High School. Rankings are based on the program and the best team is not discovered until the games are played. Northwest Suburban got no respect all year and Blaine is in the Championship game. Mahtomedi and Totino Grace get pimped every year and where are they?

I also specified DeLaSalle as an upset.

I hope you post photos from all the games after the prep bowl. There were six semi-finals on Saturday, but photos from only three of the games.

I hope we shoot all the Prep Bowl games, too. We didn’t have enough photographers available to shoot all 12 semifinal games, but hopefully we can change that for the Prep Bowl.

I call all the games for CGB on KDIO Radio. It is too bad someone had to lose that game between Kittson and CGB.The Kittson players, coaches and fans are all winners and you should all be proud of yourselves.CLASS ACT ALL THE WAY. My next prediction is CGB by 12 over Houston. GOOD LUCK WOLVERINES

They say change can be good…and I am glad to see some new teams in the prep bowl experience the thrill of carpet burn at the metrodome. Picking Wayzata over Blaine 24-7, Northfield over Man W, 14-13, DLS over GSL 21-14, rest of teams, not sure. Good luck to all teams while the rest of us try and digest all that food and watch some quality HS football!

Wayzata in a close one, Mankato W, GSL, Luverne, KMS and Houston. Still think its funny how people go against GSL…you’re probably right what have they done lately anyway. Think it’ll be closer this year though GSL 31 DLS 13

No one has mentioned anything about the 2 weeks break. I don’t understand how they can play semi’s during the week during the day, but now they have to wait until after Thanksgiving to play again. How will that impact the teams and why not play this week on Thursday and Friday or all day Friday for that matter. Sounds like a money deal to me.

It’s about TV and they won’t get an audiance during the week and the Gophers are home this weekend.

John Millea says:

November 18th, 2008 at 11:09 am

As far as TV goes, it is a money deal (sort of). With the Gophers playing on Saturday, that kills the Friday-Saturday Prep Bowl for this week, and the TV contract mandates a Friday-Saturday Prep Bowl. Plus, the longtime Prep Bowl tradition is to play on Thanksgiving weekend. For what it’s worth, I have heard no coaches complain about the long break between semis and the Prep Bowl.

DLS has not faced a defense like GSL all year! They do not face those types of defenses playing a 2A schedule. It is going to be very hard for DLS to have the BIG play Offense against that defense. Yes, it is true that GSL’s offense is average! but defense wins Titles! GSL 28-12
Mankato West is the best 4A team in the tounry!

DM says:

November 18th, 2008 at 11:24 am

At this point how can you pick against Blaine and Northfield? Wayzata and West should win but they’re going against two extremely confident teams right now.

I like GSL, Caledonia, Royalton, and Houston along with Wayzata and West.

I have seen DLS play in the Tri-Metro. Their QB is a below average passer, but they have a very good running game. I think GSL will win, but by a slimmer margin than most are predicting….

no matter who delasalle beats they never play a good enough schedule for anyone..they beat rochester lourdes for the second year in a row. they beT New London-Spicer.. 3 years ago they beat watertown-mayer..they beat good teams just like everyother team in state. if they werent a good team they wouldnt be playing for a championship for the second straight year. its not their fault they play in the tri-metro. DLS will win they will show up this year!

HutchLeaderGuy says:

November 18th, 2008 at 5:30 pm

I’ve seen three of the teams in the Prep Bowl because they played the Hutch Tigers. I can say with much certainity that Northfield will have trouble with West’s passing attack. The Raiders are a much different team than when we put up 440 rushing yards on them in week two though.

As for 3A, G-SL’s defense this year is among the best I’ve ever seen. Seniors at every level of the defense led by middle linebacker Tyler Lang, who is a stud.

Another big thing in G-SL’s advantage is coaching. They knew exactly what LS-H and Holy Family were going to do. Result - six points on the backups. It’s the same DeLaSalle team with Evan Williams replacing Jeremy Randle. They stopped them last year - they’ll stop them again.

GSL says:

November 18th, 2008 at 5:50 pm

People under estimate GSL. They will bring home the state title again. One thing I love about this team is that they don’t have cockiness toward the other teams. They work hard for the titles they earn. DeLaSalle will be runner up once again.

Bears Football says:

November 18th, 2008 at 7:04 pm

I had the “pleasure” of playing DeLaSalle this year, and I seriously doubt that there is any 3A team that can beat them, including the hallowed Glencoe-Silver Lake. DeLaSalle has speed all over the field. Every time they get the ball on a kickoff return or a punt return, they have a good chance of scoring. Their line is big, disciplined, and comes off the ball hard. The only way I can see GSL beating them is if DLS fumbles six times or something, because on a pure athletic basis no one in 3A can compete with DeLaSalle.

A Bengal says:

November 18th, 2008 at 10:26 pm

Well looks like we don’t have a chance of winning for the third straight game… Sigh… well I guess we’re gonna lose automatically because we all know the Blaine Bengals were heavily favored in both their Eden Prairie and Cretin games

BigGuy says:

November 19th, 2008 at 7:40 am

DeLaSalle plays a very weak schedule which leads to big numbers and stats. I think this will still be one of the best games on the weekend.

NFontaine says:

November 19th, 2008 at 8:54 am

Wayzata looks very good, but so did Eden Prairie and Cretin. There’s something about this Blaine team that I just don’t want to bet against. Blaine 21, Wayzata 17.

It'sDLSYEAR!!! says:

November 19th, 2008 at 9:27 am

I do understand why people hate on DLS…One they dominate their conference because it is weak. Two they beat good teams in state like Rochester Lourdes and New London-Spicer. Three they are undefeated and playing GLS who has one lost to a tought orono team, in which they play in a tough wright county conference. I just want people to understand that their tough competition this year in Rochester Lourdes and New London-Spicer were come from behind wins. Plus if you look at each come from behind win, they shut each team down in the second half. They shut down Rochester Lourdes for 2 quarters till they scored with 14 seconds left and shut down NLS for 3 quarters, mind you NLS beat their other two opponents by a margin of 91-0 before playing DLS. One of the teams NLS beat was Albany 30-0 which was undefeated and the #2 team in state in Class 3A before losing to NLS. Yes, everyone wanted to see Albany and GLS last year and this year, but DLS has overcome each challenge each year to meet GLS. This year I feel the team is focused and ready to win the cahmpionship this year and go UNDEFEATED!!!

Go DLS!!! my pick for class 3A

My picks are:

NineMan: CGB over Houston 35-21
1A: Royalton over KMS 49-35
2A: Luverne over Caledonia 14-7
3A DLS over GLS 42-28
4A: Northfield over Mankato West 28-14
5A: Blaine over Wayzata 28-21

jeb says:

November 19th, 2008 at 10:20 am

I want Blaine to win, but have to go with Wayzata 31-20. Blaine’s Defense and/or special teams will prob. need to score and/or set up some scores with turnovers.

Northfield is well coached by a class act in Bubba Sullivan. Mankato sure seems to have a nice team. This seems like a toss up. Mankato 27 Northfield 26.

Three words- Glencoe Silver Lake. 27-20

Don’t know enough about the smaller schools-I know they play hard and most usually with a lot of class. Congratulations to all teams on their fine seasons.

jeb says:

DLS guy, you really think that DLS can score 42 on Glencoe Silver Lake?

Primus says:

November 19th, 2008 at 10:33 am

First off — It is GSL not GLS… I agree the DLS is tuff and have some impressive wins in the playoffs and you cannot deny that.. However, they are not playing a team in GSL, it’s a Program… They have 2 weeks to prepare for a super fast and highly talented DLS team at it skilled positions.. Look what they did last year on a week of prep time to DLS… To me, this is a vewry similar, talented DSL team and I think they will manage to keep it close in the first 2 and a half quarters and GSL’s 2 platoon system will wear down DLS…

Also, who wants to see GSL and Albany the past 2 years?? I prefer GSL and DLS both years… DLS has been #1 all year and should make for a great match up… I do believe these are the 2 best teams in 3A… I prefer DLS cause they bring that confidence into every game and are looking for respect, which again should make for a great game!!

Again, throw the records out the window, is Northfield a bad team cause of 3 losses?? This is a whole new game when you get to the dome, and I believe DLS learned that lesson last year and it will only benefit them this year…

Pick…. GSL 28 - DLS 6

moeby says:

November 19th, 2008 at 10:40 am

I have hear enough about DLS schedule for this past season, I understand that they have speed on both sides of the ball. But, it must face a very physical defense in GSL, which once again, they have not faced in thier conferance. In addition, GSL is a second have team, DLS cannot afford to fall behind like they did the past 2 play-off! Because DLS will not recover!!

I see that people on here are very confident in GSL beating DSL because they feel they have a program and DSL just has a talented team…

That’s interesting. GSl has been dominate and I give all respects to that program and to the competition they play. But to say that DSL does not have a program worth talking about. This is why this game is so big. Last year GSL prove that they were better in all phases of the game and they did out coach DSL. If you did attend the game last year, it was GSL’s defense that pretty much won the game. DSL did move the ball, but did not have any big plays. GSL offense wasn’t moving the ball at will on DSL defense, it was just 4 miscues that turned into big plays that cost DSL the game period.

This is a new year and people feel that since GSl won last year and have tradition on their side, that they will win this year…mark my words, GSL REIGN IS OVER!!! DSL understands what took place last year and have had all year to work towards this rematch…It will be a great game, but a new Class 3A champion will prevail in DSL. They’re not Blaine (WHO WILL BEAT WAYZATA FOR THE 5A TITLE) but they will be like them as David will sleigh Goliath…

GO DSL and BLAINE!!!

HutchLeaderGuy says:

November 19th, 2008 at 2:25 pm

It’s not that Glencoe-Silver Lake fans don’t think highly of DeLaSalle - they do - who doesn’t? They have outstanding talent on the offensive side of the ball. Van Leer at QB, Williams at RB and Barker at WR. Van Leer is among the most talented punt returners in the state as well.

But, G-SL is just as talented across the board. Instead of having one stud back, they have four guys that get it done. I’ll also take the lines from the Panthers. DeLaSalle had some monsters last year and G-SL still found it pretty easy running and throwing the ball.

Beating teams such as Lourdes and NL-S are great, but after watching G-SL the past three seasons, beating them is another thing.

Primus says:

November 19th, 2008 at 2:55 pm

“Just for 4 miscues” 4 miscues = 24 points + PAT’s…. This is the Prep Bowl and only 1 miscue can mark an L… I also agree that DLS needs a fast start… There is no way the can play from behind against the GSL D… And when your playing from behind, mistakes tend to happen…

For all you DeLasalle Advocates:

Just remember, delasalle plays no one during the year and before Delano left their section, they always got dominated by Delano in their section after posting a perfect record…. Weird how GSL is perfect against Delano since 1999! Delasalle has been blessed with a cake walk for a playoff run and has still managed to have games go til the end. Plus they only have athletes, but to win a championship you need a dominate line in which Delasalle doesnt. Meanwhile GSL has played nearly flawless football during the playoffs due to their regular season schedule which includes 4A teams that are amongst the best in 4A. There is a reason for our domination against 3A. Its our schedule. Expect Delasalle to get punched in the mouth and run away crying to their weak conference for another unblemished record next year. Only to lose to GSL AGAIN. GSL 42 Delasalle 14

It’s funny to see how you bad mouth DLS, but the people that are advocates for DLS give nothing but respect to your program. Another thing is that yes Delano beat DLS in the section before moving up to 4A. Yes, your conference is WAY BETTER than the Tri-Metro and probably second best in state to the Lake. Like you said your schedule is way better…

But come on here ripping DLS because they have a weak schedule. It’s not their fault that the Tri-Metro is a horrible football conference. It’s not their fault that the teams they beat this season didn’t have the athletes or the word ou used “DOMINATION” to beat them. It’s not their fault that they are ranked #1 in Class 3A and the press states that their one of the most talented team in state.

So before you say that DLS is going to get punched in the mouth by GSL, their line is not measurable, and that GSL will dominate…I hope you have your ticket to the game on next saturday at noon. i will be there as well cheering on DLS. it will be a great game, but once it’s over you will see a new champion. Unlike you, I will clap for GSL for their good season with 2 losses, while the undefeated islanders hoist the championship trophy…

hsfbdork says:

November 20th, 2008 at 9:48 am

First of all the 3A title game has TOO MANY S’s and L’s. I will refer to them as Glencoe and Salle. People say that Salle has motivation from being exposed last year. Fine, but I can tell the Glencoe team to go back and look at the video shot last year by the Strib. prior to the game where the Salle students essentially called Glencoe (Where’s Glencoe?) a bunch of farmers, hicks, etc…the result on the field was a good kick in the mouth.

Someone said “if it wasn’t for 4 miscues…” This is the state championship, buddy. Ain’t no room for miscues! Glencoe is a very disciplined team. I will be highly impressed if Salle scores more than 21 points. Glencoe has a “none or one” policy on their defense - no touchdowns or at most, one.

So the Salle supporters are well aware of their weak schedule and want to hang their hats on their state wins. Fine, but remember, you gave up 36 points to Lourdes, Glencoe has given up 39 points TOTAL in their LAST 7 GAMES - 19 if those to a strong 4A Waconia team. In the “quality opponents” in the State Tournament, you’ve given 50 points, Glencoe has given 6 - a meaninless, end of the 4th score to LeSeuer-Henderson. Don’t come to the dome thinking you are going to hang 50 on the Panthers.

In keeping with Glencoe’s 32-pt. margin of victory since the playoffs started,

Prediction:
Glencoe-Silver Lake 38
Delasalle 6

jeb says:

November 20th, 2008 at 10:28 am

Glencoe Silver Lake seems to be a class program. De La Salle probably needs to score a special teams TD or two to be in the game. Anytime a team has their former four-time State Champ Coach as an assistant, I would think that gives the coaching nod to GSL. He will probably come up with a plan to help their special teams contain the speed of DLS. As for the fans of DLS, I agree, that about a dozen or so of them, if they continue their unsporting acts that several have witnessed, they will most likely end up in court plea bargaining their way out of a disorderly conduct case. Please remember this game is about the kids, not the adults.

GETOFFTHEIRNUTZ... says:

November 20th, 2008 at 1:21 pm

Get off glencoe’s nuts…they’re not as good as all their supporters are saying…By the way, what “unsporting” acts are you talking about jeb? from what i’ve been reading, it appears that glencoe’s supporters are talking more trash than the DeLaSalle Supporters…It will be lucky if glencoe even has the speed to keep up with DeLaSalle. They will easily score on glencoe and put to rest all you glencoe supporters that don’t think that DeLaSalle has a chance.

moeby says:

November 20th, 2008 at 1:28 pm

“None or One” that is the GLS Defense battle cry! A physical defense wins over speed! Also, GSL has a good young QB that can run and throw the ball! I think wayzata will absolutely dominate Blaine. Wayzata right now looks as good as the 2006 and 2007 EP State Champions. I do really respect Blaine though their quarterback is very good and their defensive line does not get enough credit. One of the main reasons they beat my team is they got pressure on the quarter back all night and held the running to a minimum. Sorry Blaine fans, Wayzata is way to deep and strong

hsfbdork says:

November 20th, 2008 at 10:15 pm

The 3A game is probably going to be the best game of the weekend. One of the things I’d like to point out is this - DLS offense. Their own fans are agreeing with the fact that they have a very weak schedule. So are they averaging 50 pts. game because they have an overpowering offense OR because their competition is so weak? GSL has proven they have a spectacular defense and a very good offense - they score against average to above-average HS defensive teams.

Therefore, the question is this: Will DLS offense be unstoppable OR will GSL contain an offense that hasn’t been challenged?

Based on the state quarters and semis, I give the edge to GSL.

Going to be a fun game!

GSL is a 4A team playing in 3A (not by numbers but by quality of players). This game wont even be close and I don’t wanna hear the “Oh DLS had a bad game” comments that I know will come out when they get shut down.

I think that they will proove all u GSL fans and team wrong and pull out a win!!! they have what it takes…they had whut it took last year but they got big heads…now they dont and most of those players know what its like to play in a championship game now and will come out on top…they have a great line up front both on defense and offense and they will change this game around and GSL will NOT come out of this with a win!!!

First of all I want to give congrates to DLS to making it back to the title game, that is not a easy task no matter what conference you plan in. You still have to get through section play and then through the rounds of state brackets. I truely believe the 22 GLS players on the field this year are the best total group GSL has put on the field in the last 3 years. There are NO super stars like we have had in the past, but all 22 know their task and the task for the player next to them. If there was a need to they could of easily put up 40+ points per game but that is not how GLS plays. They control the ball, but as shown against Waconia they can move the ball 56 yards in 18 seconds if they have too. DLS has some very great players, but to win the 3A championship the winning team MUST have all players on the field play as 1. I wish the best for both teams but believe GLS will come out on top 28-13

Where’s all the KMS hype on this page? They’ve been rolling to finish the season and have studs across their skilled positions. QB has full ride to wrestle at U; Jr. RB is getting looks from about 3 Big10 schools (may set state rushing record next year) and a handful or other kids could pay D2. Not bad for a class that will graduate about 55.
