The wrestling teams from Coon Rapids and Albert Lea will meet in a college setting on Friday. They will face off at Augsburg College’s Si Melby Hall on Friday at 6 p.m. as a precursor to Augsburg’s dual with Wartburg. Augsburg is ranked No. 1 in Division III and Wartburg is No. 2.
Both high school teams have Augsburg ties.
Coon Rapids head coach Bob Adams was a three-time All-American, a two-time MIAC champion and a 134-pound national champion at Augsburg in 1983. His son, Jason, is Augsburg’s starting 157-pounder (currently 26-4 and ranked No. 5 nationally). Jason was an All-American last season with a second-place finish at 141 pounds, making Bob and Jason the first father-and-son combination to earn All-America honors in the history of Augsburg wrestling.
Albert Lea assistant coach Jon Hansen is the father of two current Augsburg wrestlers — senior Zach Hansen and junior Beau Hansen (currently an Augsburg starter at 165 with a 15-6 record). And two of Albert Lea head coach Larry Goodnature’s sons wrestled at Augsburg — Brian (1997-99, 2000-02) and Nate (2007-08).
Albert Lea is ranked third in Class 3A and Coon Rapids is No. 7.
