Looking back at state wrestling

After taking Sunday off to scrub my singlet, I’m back at the keyboard preparing for this week’s state hockey tournament, as well as section tournaments in girls’ and boys’ basketball.

But before we put the wrestling season to bed, here are my three favorite memories from the four-day run at the X:

1) As the individual championship matches began, looking up and seeing the arena nearly full. We’re used to the lower bowl being jammed with bodies, but to see a crowded upper deck is quite the cool deal.

2) The standing ovation for Kennedy’s Robby Fisher and Apple Valley’s Destin McCauley after Fisher’s 10-5 victory in the 3A title match at 135 pounds.

3) Seeing all my wrestling buddies, guys like The Unit and Rep. Bob Dettmer and many others. The wrestling tournament is a combination state fair/family reunion/backyard brawl and it is nothing but fun.

Well done, wrestling fraternity.
