The boys’ hockey state tournament is only one period old, but fans will be lucky if they see more goals in the next few days as dazzling as the one Nate Schmidt scored at the end of the first period for St. Cloud Cathedral. Schmidt, a junior defenseman and a Gophers recruit, picked up the puck short-handed in the neutral zone down the left boards, came in 1-on-2, split a pair of Mahtomedi defenders and made a move on goalie Brad Wohlers before shooting back into a half-open net while falling down.

It came with 20 seconds left in the period and was a huge momentum-turner. Instead of doing no worse than being down a goal and thinking it might tie things up on a power play that expired with two seconds left in the period, Mahtomedi is down 2-0 at the break.
