Let’s play ball in Class 3A
Posted on June 11th, 2009 – 9:48 AMBy David LaVaque
Good morning. Coming to you from the Midway Stadium press box. I ate breakfast at the Copper Dome in St. Paul, located across from baseball institution Cretin-Derham Hall. The Raiders were out playing catch and taking grounders, but the 11-time state champions did not qualify for state this season.
Here are the teams playing in Class 3A today: Eden Prairie and St. Michael-Albertville get started at 10 a.m. with Centennial vs. Owatonna at 12:30 p.m. here at Midway. Playing at nearby Siebert Field at the University of Minnesota are Eagan and Forest Lake (10 a.m.) and Stillwater and Hopkins (12:30 p.m.) The four winners are back at Midway for semifinal games at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
Check here for score updates throughout the day. Play ball!

Go Rangers!
How about an update?
STMA defeats Eden Prairie 2-1:
From MSHSL:
David Borchardt tossed a complete game five-hitter to lead the Knights to the victory. The senior righthander walked four and struck out four to earn the win. SMA played little ball to earn the win. In the first inning, Jason Dehmer beat a relay throw after Blake Schirmers was thrown out stealing for the first run. The Knights scored again in the fourth on a throwing error for a 2-0 lead. The Eagles scored in the fifth inning but left the bases loaded in the sixth. For the game, Eden Prairie stranded nine runners.
STMA will play the winner of Forest Lake/Eagan at 3pm at Midway.
Forest Lake 6, Eagan 2
From MSHSL:
Forest Lake jumped out to an early 5-1 lead with two runs in the first and three in the second as they defeated Eagan in the 2009 MSHSL Class AAA Quarterfinals at Siebert Field.
Mike Swenson was efficient on the hill, throwing a complete game to earn the win for Forest Lake. He allowed two runs on 12 hits without issuing any walks while throwing just 70 pitches in the game.
Kyle Young was 2-4 with an RBI while Travis Evgen walked and scored twice each in front of him.
The Wildcats made the game interesting late, with back-to-back doubles in the sixth inning to score a run to cut the score to 6-2.
But a costly baserunning mistake in the inning cost Eagan a chance to cut into the lead further.
In the seventh, Eagan loaded the bases but Swenson was able to pitch out of the jam to preserve the victory.
Forest Lake moves on to face St. Michael-Albertville in the semifinals while Eagan will play Lake Conference rival Eden Prairie in the consolation bracket.
