We’re going down for maintenance (but not you)

The Preps Insider blog will be idle for a few hours today, beginning around 4 p.m. Our techies tell us the site is being switched to a new server, thus the down time.

However … readers will still be able to post comments, even though us staffers won’t. At least that’s what I’m told.

Cross your fingers, knock on wood, whatever it takes.

Valek won’t wrestle

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

Undefeated Scott West senior Tony Valek, who won a Class 2A state title at 135 pounds last year and is ranked No. 1 this year at 140, just told me he won’t be able to wrestle at state because of an injury.

He suffered a dislocated right elbow in practice Tuesday. His elbow is swollen and looks painful. When I met him here at the X, I shook his left hand. Doctors told him he might be sidelined for eight weeks.

“It’s disappointing,” he told me. “But hopefully the team will still do well.”

Scott West, which is ranked No. 5 among 2A teams, will face No. 10 Plainview-Elgin-Millville in Thursday’s quarterfinals at 7 p.m.

3 hours from the first whistle

All the wrestlers who made it to state are gathered inside the Xcel Energy Center, going through skin checks and weigh-ins. I have witnessed a wide variety of haircuts and dye jobs since arriving.

The action starts at 4 p.m. with the first round of Class 1A individual matches, followed by 2A at 6 and 3A at 8. Team competition begins tomorrow.

How’s this for rotten luck?

Scott West senior Tony Valek suffered an injury at the end of wrestling practice Tuesday, the final workout before the state tourney begins today. See the story here.
