24 hours to state wrestling

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

The state tournament begins at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Xcel. I’m making plans for the “Tournament Tales” columns I will write during the event, but I also want to hear from wrestling fans.

What are some great untold stories from this wrestling season?

Erickson, Grogan honored

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

Sarah Erickson of Bemidji is your 2008 Ms. Hockey Award winner. She and Eagan’s Alyssa Grogan, 2008 girls’ senior goalie of the year, were just recognized during the second intermission of this afternoon’s Wild game vs. Calgary.

Each donned freshly-stitched Wild jerseys as they waved to the crowd from high atop the ice on the Fox Sports Net stage.

EP wins

5-3 is your final.

The teams traded goals in the third before Andrea Green’s empty netter with 1:08 left all but sealed the deal for Eden Prairie.

Eagles’ players chanted, “Shave the stache!” to coach Tim Morris after the official championship photo, wanting him to lose his moustache in honor of the team’s second title in three years.

His first statement to reporters shortly after? “There’s no way!”

Still, goalie Maddie Burke said she plans on buying Morris a razor and shave gel sometime soon - just in case.

After two, it’s 3-2 EP

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

Grand Rapids/Greenway made it a one-goal game when Marina Guyer’s backhand shot found the back of the net at the 10:06 mark.

It was pretty uneventful from there, save a scary moment with 5:08 to play. Lightning senior defender Heather Horgen was bumped head-first into the corner boards and remained flat on her back for several minutes. She did sit up and was assisted to the Lightning bench.

An Eden Prairie penalty was whistled on the play, but the hit was not malicious.

2A title game: EP up 3-1 after one

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

I arrived a little late tonight thanks to some boys’ hockey section semifinal action going into double overtime this afternoon. Eden Prairie, however, is right on the mark here in the Class 2A girls’ hockey state championship.

Nikki Ludwigson and Kelly Seeler scored 56 seconds apart in the game’s opening two minutes for the Eagles, who hold a 3-1 lead over Grand Rapids-Greenway after one period.

Andrea Green scored a pretty goal with just over 7 minutes to play. She took the puck at center ice, and fended off the Lightning’s Morgan Illlikainen all the way to the crease. At that point, Green switched the puck from her backhand to her forehand and slipped the puck into the net.

The goal for Grand Rapids/Greenway came at 13:36 of the period. Skating with a 5-on-3 advantage, Molly Arola picked up the loose puck to the right of the crease and buried a wrist shot.
