Now the fallout begins. I’ll be calling Lake Conference officials today, trying to get a feel for how they will go forward.

As I watch the small Lake Conference contingent leave the room, it brings to mind something that has baffled me during this process.

From the start, it was no secret that the Lake didn’t want any of the Classic Lake schools as members. And yet, the Lake did not appeal the placement committee’s decision, and no one from the Lake spoke against it at this meeting.

I don’t understand that.

After the first vote, the board took separate votes on placing each of the four schools into the Lake. On each one, the vote was unanimous.

A voice vote just took place on whether or not to affirm the hearing officer’s decision to stand by the placement committee’s recommendation. There were no “nay” votes.

Wayzata athletic director Jaime Sherwood spoke to the board briefly, saying his school appreciated the work of the MSHSL throughout this process. He added that Wayzata does not agree with its placement into the Lake Conference, and that he feels the “correct placement” would have been into the Northwest Suburban.

Osseo principal Bob Perdaems spoke on behalf of the Northwest Suburban, saying his conference agrees that the Lake is a better fit for the four Classic Lake schools.

The Lake Conference has several representatives in the room, but none chose to speak.
