“Wide open?”

January 8th, 2008 – 7:45 PM by Bob von Sternberg

As early returns continued to show Hillary Clinton with a slim lead over Barack Obama — 19,977 votes to 18,130 with 19 percent of the vote counted — the punditocracy was starting to hedge its collective bets and pivot toward a possible Clinton comeback. On MSNBC, Keith Obermann declared that “the continuing wave for Barack Obama is not happening yet.” Chris Matthews chimed in that as of 7:45 p.m., “this looks like it’s wide open.”
Meanwhile, over at CNN, the network’s number crunchers were showing that Obama was winning in the same part of the state where loser Howard Dean won four years ago and that Clinton was ahead in Manchester, the state’s biggest city. The implication was pretty transparent.
