How did Robert Smith get that hot scoop?

OK, Vikings fans, you can “officially” start salivating about drafting Ted Ginn Jr., as the Buckeyes wide receiver has decided to turn pro. But the best part about the whole thing is how he made the announcement in “a statement to ESPN’s Robert Smith.” Such an intrepid reporter, that Bob Smith. Oh, and a former Buckeye. I wonder if that helped.

Any way the vikings could get him ? They did bring up the rear (no homophobia intended) in the NFL.

Welcome to the real world. The Vikes hit on a receiver in the first round in 1998. Since then, I think maybe 7 first round WR’s have gone to the pro bowl. Have faith in the scouts. Lets find a good Marques Colston type(waiting til the 7th round not necessary) and not draft a kick returner top 10. Whoa, good idea. Waiting for my pats on the back.

not being a college ball enthusiast, I’ve seen him in only highlight promos, but the guy looks like someone the Vikes should trade their entire receiver corps to move up in the draft order.

If the Vikings tried to trade their entire receiving corps to someone for a pick, they’d have to move down in the order — not up — to make it a fair trade.

I’m with Enzy. Drafting WRs is a shot in the dark. Recent history shows that second and third rounders tend to do as well as first rounders. And just about all rookie WRs tend to struggle in their first year. Guys like Moss and Colston are the exception, not the rule. The Vikes would be better served spending #7 on a pass-rushing defensive end or a tackle for the right side of the o-line, or maybe even a QB if one is there.

I disagree simply due to the fact that the wide reciever position is in most dire neede of repair. Free agency does not look promising WR’s and to be honest the draft is the only spot where halfway decent talent will be found. A DE can wait and may be found in either in free agency or in the later round of the draft.I agree that that position should be a priority in the offseason, but an improved reciever core is needed for any QB to succed in this offense.

If Ginn doesn’t prove to be a fragile player (but it is weird how he did hurt himself ..not game related), I say go for him if they can. Nothing wrong with having a rookie qb/wr tandem if it works out down the road. If they s.ck next year playing rookies, so what ? They s.cked this year playing vets. Speed and height you never can have enough of ..unless you’re playing golf I guess.

The problem with Ginn is that he has the same weaknesses as Williamson — questionable hands as a receiver and poor route-running. I would argue that the other OSU receiver, Gonzalez, would be a better fit here. He’s not as quick but has surer hands, and may well be available in round 2.

Gonzalez may be good…is good..but already reminds me of Wiggins…all hands, no feet, a soccer player in reverse

Calvin Johnson is as good a receiver as you can find in the last 3 drafts, but he won’t fall to 7, and he’ll still be up and down. Braylon Edwards was a lock at no. 3, and he still didn’t make Charlie Frye look good, did he? Take an OT, trade McKinnie for another pick and a backup OT, and take a DE. Receivers are best in the 3rd round. Small College, Big Size, Big Stats. Get the guy from San Jose State. James Jones? Great receiver pick, but he might be late first round.

Still need receivers, and more than one no matter who the qb will be. Draft him, trade for them, but the situation can’t be ignored that the vikes have little speed and little vertical in that dept.

Prioritizing an OT over a WR would be a mistake. Althought the pass blocking may be questionsable, the line still managed to produce a 1,000+ yard rusher in Chester Taylor. The team does need an OT but without an effective passing game the coverage sacks alone will negate any improvements on the line.

As far as Brian McKinney, keep him for another year at least. He is making the big money, lets see if he can prove his worth and finally break through. Besides, he is too expensive and unproven for most teams that would be willing to give up anything worthwhile.

Paul Paulos says:

Dump McKinney …he’s big, strong and immobile and 2 out of 3 IS bad

Rocco says:

There is already 1 hole in the OL that will need to be filled, why add another? It is hard enough to find one effective OT in the leauge much less two. Besides the team has bigger fish to fry (WR’s, DE, etc)
