This is your chance to impress the British ladies

“Ice skating in Britain is cool — and that’s official.” That’s the lead paragraph from this Reuters story, which says skating is the new fad across the pond. Though we don’t like stories with puns in the lead (ice … cool … smack! …), we will accept the story’s premise. Hey, they gave us the delicious fish and chips at Brit’s Pub, and we gave them ice skating. It’s time to grab your skates and head to London to show off all the sweet moves you learned growing up in frozen Minnesota.

I know this blurb (mine) concerns figure skating much more than just ice skating perse which is sorta cool, but every Winter Olympics I watch the figure skating (what choice do I have since 98 % of the coverage is under the skirts of the female skaters) yet every Olympics I wait breathlessly for a tremendous hockey style crash into the boards particularly by the “ice dancers”, a sport in name only. To me, any sport that can’t be measured objectively by cms. or meters or elapsed time but where the outcome of a “performance” has to wait for some has been in the stands ( a “judge” ) is no sport to me…but I digress, since ice skating, as I said, is cool….

I would like to know why no one has written anything about this kid BLAKE WILLIAMS at Blake school leading the state in scoring and is being recruited by D1 schools juest a thought

Jerry,

to clarify this figure skating thang: (first off figure skaters would never say “thang”)

Anyway, a “sport” is a sport when the competitor knows IMMEDIATELY if he/she has won or lost by their elapsed time in finishing a course, how high they jumped…you get the idea…some objective measurement is being used.

However, in figure skating if some bag in the stands (no matter how good she WAS a billion years ago or much she thinks she knows now) but when this Austrian/Czech/American/Russian…is involved, it no longer is a sport but an Artsport, a mix of athletics and art, but no true sport as outlined above.

Thus gymnastics is another “artsport” a mix of displayed athletic skills and a subjective evaluation of those skills.

Some people love these Artsports. I think they dominate Olympic coverages possibly because more women can be presented there since the NFL playoffs feature few women for example. For me, Artsports grind on me esp. when they hold up those 9.6 scores. Can you imagine in Nascar telling the “winner” he won for sure but lost style point in turn 3 and 4 so he now is bumped to 6th. Dang. Thang.
