Some love for Gophers wrestling

OK, we realize wrestling is somewhat of a “niche” sport with a small but rabid fan base, and that the majority of the sporting public doesn’t really get into it. But the Gophers wrestling team deserves some credit. The squad won the National Duals on Sunday, which should vault Minnesota into the No. 1 ranking in the nation. The Gophers look, at this point, to be the favorites to win the NCAA title. In the past 10 years, head coach J Robinson has guided this team to two NCAA titles, four runner-up finishes and two third-place finishes (not to mention a fifth and an eighth, their worst showings in the past decade). Football and wrestling might be like comparing apples to oranges (though, as Chuck Klosterman noted a few years back in this book, which you absolutely have to read, apples and oranges are about as similar as any two things you could compare), Robinson inherited a decent program and made it elite. If Tim Brewster can accomplish anything close to what he’s done, the Gophers football program will be in good shape. In fact, we feel a Q&A with Robinson coming soon to a newspaper near you.
