Minnesota makes ESPN.com for all the wrong reasons

In case you missed it, high school wrestling in the state of Minnesota has been shut down for eight days because of a herpes outbreak. It’s a big enough national story that ESPN has a link off its home page. Only one problem: At least as of a minute ago, until they fix it, they have spelled the sport in question as “wresling” in the headline.

Ladies and gentlemen, start your incredibly tasteless joke engines!
I’ll get us started:
“The MSHSL has contacted varsity cheerleading advisors around the state for advice on how to deal with this problem.”
I was going to make a Ron Mexico joke, but Deadspin was on that like Sean Salisbury on a camera phone.
This story is a laugh for uneducated people.
Here’s my view that I blogged about on my site earlier today.
Today, Minnesota high school wrestling woke up to a nightmare. The Minnesota State High School League has suspended all wrestling activities for the next 8 days. For anyone who isn’t familiar with wrestling, this sounds a lot worse than it is. Yes, Herpes Gladitorium stays with you for life and does not go away. However, it’s about a step up from the common cold sore. When treated, the symptoms go away within a couple of days. Herpes gladitorium has nothing to do with anything sexual. It is mostly found on the face, neck and scalp. It’s contracted through skin to skin contact. I was fortunate enough not to get this skin disease while I was wrestling. This story has blown up and is now on the front page of ESPN.com. That’s bad news and publicity for wrestling. Minnesota’s main wrestling doctor, BJ Anderson, is EXTREMELY overcautious when it comes to wrestling and skin issues. It does not surprise me that he pushed for the shutdown. It’s a good way to get his name in the paper also. In 1999, my senior year of high school, there were 63 cases of Herpes Gladitorium among MN high school wrestlers and they did not shut it down. This year there has been 24 confirmed cases. However, they are probably doing this so that there is not a repeat of 1999.
