President Bush to finally address Hurricanes

In your face, Kanye West! As it turns out, our president does, indeed, care about the people of New Orle- … oh, not that hurricane. Instead, members of the 2006 Stanley Cup-winning Carolina Hurricanes will finally get to meet President Bush in a White House ceremony scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friday. Highlights from the press release: Media members who are U.S. citizens that wish to attend will be “required to provide their date of birth and Social Security Number.” And, sadly, this is not open to the public. Otherwise it could have made a fantastic Coors Light commercial. No word yet on whether the Prez and Rod Brind’amour will drink Molson from the cup. Also, there has so far been no substance to the rumor that Bush was rooting hard for the Oilers in the cup finals. (And thanks to colleague Jay Weiner for the heads up on this story).

I understand that Bush and the rest of his lame duck stormtroopers plan on doing more than a Coors Lite ad to distract us one and all at the White House on Friday. It’s been rumored that this man Bush, a historical and embarrassing aberration as President, the winner of two technical knockouts, has penned his version of “We are the World” recast in the light of his sterling world performances as “I am the World”. Michael J. would approve. The new version has a country beat to it to recapture the hearts of the tavern patriots who voted for him in the first place.
I’m asking for Randball to pull Paul Paulos post. I mean it.
This isn’t what this board is supposed to be used for. If you want to go on some political tirade, then go to your local liberal site. Sports is sports. Politics should stay off this at all costs.
I want sports debates. Not political.

I’ll try a little harder, Captain R+B, but sports treated as completely separate from what’s happening in a society has been done before. It was done quite sucessfully when Ol’ man Adolf tried to parade his Aryan superstars as Tops in the world, (somehow forgetting about Jesse Owens in the process).
So, it’s my suggestion, Gopher, that you read all the hyperlinks above (the Kanye West’s raps) if you want to see sports and politics dovetailed quite well. In fact this very post we’re reading (”President Bush to finally address Hurricanes”) itself seamlessly crosses over the line between sports and the “real world”, a line I suspect is quite imaginary, a line you yourself crossed in writing in with your post complaining of mine.
My suggestion ? Write whatever you want, write it as close to the bone of sports if you can and then respond to whatever you want, but suggesting that something “isn’t what it’s supposed to be” strikes me as as narrow as a coach always telling me (it’s true) to swing at the first pitch. See ! that’s a sports reference, but, realistically Gopher, there are enough Sunshine Patriots out there who want things done “the way they are supposed to be done”. Don’t be one of them. The world is a big place. Don’t make it small.
I think the Adolf reference is a bit extreme, and you know that. I got the joke about Hurricanes and Kanye West who shot off his mouth (among other things).
The power of negative thinking never got anyone anywhere. How about not owning the issues and complain about, but offer valid, I repeat valid, solutions.
And to make the political point here briefly, I agree Bush didn’t react very well to that mess in N’awlins. But I’ll take it a step further in throwing Gov. Blanco and Mayor Nagin under the bus for their lack of leadership as well.
But who needs leaders when we have the “diplomat” Sean Penn leading the way.

Gopher, your idea of positive thinking solutions isn’t bad, but much of my raps about sports have been about what I feel about soccer (that is except for endurance, I don’t think many of these guys could play any other sport) or I write about the freak sport of b’ball, fun to play but ridiculous to watch when the trees can block and shoot with 6″ of vertical.
I do “own” these issue, Gopher, but can’t offer “positive changes” on the sport. What can I do but offer my views, here in a sports blog. I can’t change the size of the paint.
OK, I admit, Adolf was over the top but when you consider the lies about the WMD and falsified links between Al-Quaeda and Iraq, it could be argued, though I won’t do it here but have done so elsewhere, that not only should we be pulling troops out now, but booting George W. immediatedly.
As for O’Reilly, the man stays is business firing up his largely white conservative base, which is the most amazing base, a group of Sunshine Patriots who passionately wanted this war now transformed magically into a group of Sunshine Patriots against it. Can you spell Hypocrisy ? O’Reilly can’t. I say put him on a troop ship then place him in the lead Humvee on a night patrol.
