Fortunately, we know the answer. We were assigned to do a feature on the local ABA team a couple of months back and came away with this nugget of information, reprinted almost verbatim from an item we wrote in the Newspaper of the Twin Cities:

“What is a Ripknee? We’ve wondered about that since the announcement that the Minnesota Ripknees were joining the American Basketball
Association. At an event Monday to kick off the home portion of their schedule we received the answer. Jack and Billy Jurewicz, father and son, are co-owners of the team. Many years ago, Jack would tell stories to all of his kids about a superhero he made up named Ripknee who performed all sorts of magical feats.”

Hence, they decided to name the team Ripknees. Hope that clears up confusion. Please spread the word to your children, loved ones and random strangers.
