There’s a lot of stuff on the Internets

saintsgame.jpegDave MN passes along this link to the 50 most valuable major league players according to SI.com (really Baseball Prospectus). Two Twins players are in the top three: Johan Santana and Joe Mauer. Justin Morneau: 40th. Huh?

We have an interview later today with Elisabeth Shue, who is promoting a new soccer movie called “Gracie.” We plan to ask her about this. Any other suggested questions?

Every attempt at a lead-in to this item has ended tastelessly, so why don’t you just check it out at Deadspin if you haven’t already.

And yeah, that’s us with our pug at the Saints game on Saturday. Anyone have a problem with that?

It appears there are going to be a lot of resumes on the internet soon as well.

Seriously. You’d rather have (pick any of the following: Delmon Young, Jason Bay, Ryan Zimmerman, Tim Lincecum, Chris B. Young) than Francisco Liriano? On what planet?

GM: Very true … though perhaps not a very funny thing to joke about.

I would suggest asking Elisabeth Shue what it was like working with Val Kilmer on “The Saint”…Chuck Klosterman describes him as an “advanced” person, what would she describe him as?

I think most sports publications look for any opportunity to point out that they don’t think Justin Morneau deserved the MVP last season. I think they need to get over it. Then again, they didn’t make Jeter #1, so that’s a step in the right direction…

So, I take it you’re the pig with the pug on its back?

Question for Shue - If she was the Bachelorette, who would she give a rose to if she only had one to give: Daniel LaRusso, Brian Flanagan, Marty McFly, Ben Sanderson or Simon Templar? And would she propose to him?

Jon - Possibly on a planet where Francisco Liriano went through a very serious surgery in the last 12 months, which could lead to him never coming back as effective as he was, and at a minimum will likely mean it will be 2009 before he is may be ready to contribute again like he did last year, based on previous people returning from said surgery?

That plant=Earth

Jon says:

And yet, on that same planet, Liriano had a 2.16 ERA at age 22, and is having a surgery that has become virtually routine over the past few years, one that has led to most guys being at least as successful as they were pre-surgery (the article mentions Smoltz, Carpenter, and Rivera, to name three), and has prompted anecdotal evidence of guys who can actually throw harder post-surgery. And even if it does take until 2009 for him to fully return from the injury, he’ll still only be 25 years old.

Yeah, I’m not saying I don’t think he’s worth having. I’m just guessing that the list (from my take, based on always reliable PECOTA rankings, combined with the even more reliable brain of Nate Silver) is in some way imagining that being able to produce this year bumps the others up the list ahead of Liriano.

Actually, I’m impressed that Liriano even made the list, given the surgery–I would have thought he would have been dropped off due to the questions about his recovery.

Toonces51 says:

Also, for every Smoltz, Carpenter, and Rivera, there’s a Joe Mays, Pat Hentgen, and Kerry Wood. Granted, not as talented as Smoltz, Carpenter and Rivera before their surgeries–but shadows of their former selves since they’ve come back.

I hope that Liriano doesn’t end up on that route.

The obvious question for E. Shue: did she spend the night last night in Newport News?

Stu says:

Oh, and tell her Leaving Las Vegas is really bleeping depressing.

Dave MN says:

Ben, I was wondering the same thing…

I don’t think it’s CBS-friendly whatever it is.

Leaving Las Vegas is one of the biggest downers on film. It takes a while to get yourself out of the rut that it puts you in…

Ben, Dave - I paused it. It’s a hand over a mouth.

It’s old and I haven’t updated anything. I only have short one liners, and I post them here. I’ve never been inspired enough to keep a regular blog. I end up writing about what I ate for dinner or debating what color of socks to wear the next day. You get the idea.

Ask her why she didn’t appear in the video “Sweep the Leg” at http://www.sweeptheleg.com/

To which all I can hope to add is get him a bodybag, yeah.

Jon says:

Toonces - If this year’s production is taken into account, then why is Brian McCann above David Ortiz and Travis Hafner? And why is Liriano on the list at all?

I’m just saying, given that the list is somewhat prospect-heavy, and given Liriano’s season last year, I’d say he belongs much, much higher.

And I’m not sure Joe Mays is an apt comparison, given that he wasn’t nearly the pitcher Liriano was pre-surgery. Nor is Kerry Wood, who’s been decimated by other injuries.

Dave MN says:

May 8th, 2007 at 2:56 pm

Also, Joe Mays was very open about the fact that he “rushed” himself back into action, which caused some major setbacks. I don’t think the Twins are going to let the “Franchise” be that foolish. It seems that they are being *extremely* cautious with his recovery and rehabilitation.

I can’t believe you have brought me to do this, but here are some of my favorite posts to my very own blog.

As it turns out I didn’t write it. It jsut appeared in my email box from Sensei John Kreese himself the day that Miyagi died last year.

Roughkat - I’m pretty sure the Marty Mcfly question goes to our very own Lea Thompson… could be wrong about that…

roughkat says:

May 8th, 2007 at 10:16 pm

Shue played the role of Jennifer Parker, the girlfriend, in 2 and 3. Lea played Lorraine McFly, the mom.

Toonces51 says:

May 9th, 2007 at 9:39 am

Jon - I guess I meant ability to produce this year, not just production this year.

Also, because it’s the list of “guys you would take to start a team,” I think position played heavily in the list (hence Mauer being in the top 3, and McCann being higher than Ortiz–finding catchers that can produce these days is tougher than DH’s), but because it’s a list of who you would want for the next 3-5-7 years, a guy like Liriano still makes the list due to potential.

ramon says:

Roughkat, thanks for the info. I didn’t have the energy to go on IMDB. Also haven’t been watching tv on Sundays at 2pm when they always show parts 2 and 3. Lea was George McFly’s love interest, right?

But I do remember some weird scene when Marty first appears in the past and his future mother hits on him…

roughkat says:

May 9th, 2007 at 2:04 pm

Yeah, Lea (Lorraine McFly) was Marty’s (Michael J. Fox) mom, who married George McFly (Crispin Glover).

And I did have to look it up to remember that it was Shue that was in 2 and 3. For whatever reason they switched Marty’s girlfriend in the later movies.
