00000000000000000001huntdown.jpgWe put in a request with Stu to resurrect the Hunt Down, a popular feature for about two weeks until we kind of forgot about it. Stu came through in a big way in his debut. Ladies and gents: Stu brings you Rob Wilfong.

Mythical Nickname: The Fonger

Claim to Fame, Minnesota: the single finest mustache in Minnesota professional sports history.  I will brook no arguments about this.  Look at that thing.  As another mustachioed legend would muse, “Don’t act like you’re not impressed.”  Also, some players are described as having “warning track power.”  Rob had what can only be called “infield fly power.”

Claim to Fame, Everywhere Else: was a factor in the “Donnie Moore” 1986 ALCS Game.  He put California ahead 5-2 in the 8th with an RBI double, then tied it in the 9th on an RBI single after Dave Henderson’s gutshot home run put Boston ahead.  I remember watching this game, but don’t recall the Fonger being such a major player in the drama.

Where He Is Now: a scout for the Angels.  In that capacity with the Detroit Tigers, he’s credited with signing Guitar Hero casualty Joel Zumaya. No, really.

Glorious Randomness: his son Bo graduated from South Hills High School in West Covina, Calif. Other notable South Hills Huskies are the lamentable Giambi brothers, the late Cory Lidle, and … wait for it … Tommy Lee.  Shout at the Fonger!
