Sunday links: Givin’ Stu something to do
Posted on June 3rd, 2007 – 5:58 PMBy Michael Rand
Apologies to Jon for not getting these up a little sooner. With any luck, Stu hasn’t just been firing off random e-mails to people he doesn’t know. In any event, here is what Mr. Marthaler has to offer you:
35 ex-players from the NFL have applied for Alzheimer’s or dementia assistance from the league. Honestly, that’s the
kind of numbers I’d expect from a fund for ex-boxers. Or for guys who appeared in one of the “Jackass” movies.
Glendale, Colo., is spending $20.5 million of public money to build … an international rugby stadium? That can’t be right.
If you haven’t yet seen the clip of the Mississippi Braves’ manager going insane and throwing one of the great on-field tantrums of all time, you owe it to yourself to take a look. The resin-bag grenade? High comedy. [Proprietor note: Bpar also sent this link, so it has a double-seal of approval].
Finally, it’s episode 11 of Blog Show, the Mr. Irrelevant - DC Sports Blog vehicle that airs on Friday nights in the DC area, and this week, it shows what may be a watershed moment for the sports blogosphere: a live interview with Matt Ufford, the man behind With Leather. Why a watershed moment? The interview came about because of the Washington Post’s story
about the firestorm surrounding Ufford’s posts about California pole vaulter Allison Stokke. So let’s recap: blogger posts story. Highly-respected mainstream media outlet reports on blog. Other bloggers go on fairly-mainstream television and interview first blogger about it. Given that blogs have occasionally been derided (notably by Bill Simmons) as simply being vehicles to comment on mainstream media, I think it’s notable that, at least for this story, the roles were completely and totally reversed.
