Thursday (Sammy Sosa) edition: Wha’ happened?
Posted on June 21st, 2007 – 10:01 AMBy Michael Rand
Sammy Sosa is a man who is lucky Barry Bonds is still playing; otherwise, he would be incurring the full brunt of the steroid wrath he deserves. Sosa hit his 600th home run last night, an event that nobody should consider a milestone. He is just another sad reminder of the past. Sosa, you realize, hit almost half of his home runs (292) during a five-year stretch from 1998-2002, the height of the steroid era. That’s an unfathomable pace, an average of almost 60 per year (and yes, ESPN Radio, that’s a five year stretch. You might get four when you subtract one number from the other, but count them up sometime. Sorry, pet peeve lingering from last night). It started, of course, in what was once thought of as a magical 1998 season, when Sammy Sooser and Mike McGwire battled back and forth for the single-season home run record. Ah, the only high-fives to rival Tiger and his caddy for awkwardness. The fraud. It’ll never be 1998 again. But somehow it is 2007 and Sosa is still playing. Just go away, Sammy. Never play it again.
Quickly: Rod Marinelli, coach of the Detroit Lions, once wrestled a bear. … Trade everyone good! Um, as usual, Reusse makes good points. He says Torii Hunter and the Raging Violet need to go now. … Scott Baker, out maker? … Six guys whose NBA draft prospects aren’t looking so hot. … And, of course, Mystery link! Torii Hunter, Jeff Brantley and Joe Girardi. One out of three ain’t bad. Good stuff to come: Stu’s Huntdown, RandBites and so much more.
