*Garnett will not be wearing his trademark No. 21 in Boston — it’s one of the approximately 950 billion numbers the Celtics have retired. Bill Sharman, an All-NBA first team player four consecutive years in the 1950s, wore that number, and it was retired in 1966. If KG is looking to get creative and wear either 2 or 1, those are both gone, too (Red Auerbach and Walter Brown). Go ahead and pick him a new number out of what’s left.

*Regular readers know we often referred to KG as “The Raging Violet,” while the Wolves are often referred to as “McHale’s Project 109.” Is it too soon to start working on nicknames for Jefferson, Green, et al?

*Colleague Jeff Shelman is convinced that the RV vetoed a pre-draft trade to Boston because Wally S. was still on the Celtics at that point, but that he warmed to the idea now that his old nemesis is gone. A nice theory, though we think his new interest had more to with the Celtics adding Ray Allen, not subtracting Vanilla Sky.

*An e-mail from Rocket, subject line “I hate the Timberwolves.” The key point: “Intellectually, I understand this is the right thing for the Wolves to do, but I am preferring to think with my heart and not my head right now.”

*If you see Lil Dice from the I Heart KG blog, give her a hug and give Mama your beer. She could use both.

*ESPN is reporting that the deal is likely to be completed this afternoon.
