Wednesday (in the stands) edition: Wha’ Happened?
Posted on August 22nd, 2007 – 9:07 AMBy Michael Rand
So apparently the Twins announcers were sitting with the common folks last night in the stands; how do we know this? Well, a commenter here who goes by the name of swarmswarmswarm sent us about 50 billion text messages detailing the experience of sitting right by Bert Blyleven, Ron Coomer, et al. She and her crew received several autographs, including many on an Iowa road map and the one you see above on swarmswarmswarm’s shirt. Somehow through it all, she promised a production assistant named Jim that if he answered all of her questions, they would appear on this blog today. And we thought to ourself, “Well, it’s either this or talk about how it’s time to really give up on the Twins or how Eddie Griffin died,” and in the latter scenario we just weren’t sure how we were going to pull it off without saying something we would regret. So, here is the almost full text of a follow-up e-mail sent this morning by commenter swarmswarmswarm:
Dude — I had a few beers on an empty stomach and was quite excited to share with you our “circle me bert” experience. Sorry for the 5 or 6 texts and pix msgs. It was so fun to sit two rows in front of Bert and the other two guys Ray mentioned. Actually, it was his production assistant Jim who was the most entertaining.
Per the interview that I conducted with Jim. (Apparently I’m leaving surveys behind and going straight to interviews.) His favorite beer is Summit (I knew you’d hate him already). His favorite player is, surprisingly, Mauer. He works only when the Twins are in town, which means he’s typically on 7 days, off 11 [Proprietor note: If the Twins are really playing 11 of every 18 games on the road, this would explain their poor showing this season]. In his free time, he plays in a band called French Crepe? [Proprietor note: It seems more likely that he has a band playing on the French Crepes Acoustic Stage at the Fair, but you never know. It could just be a wild coincidence]. You can check them out at the State Fair on Friday. Lastly his favorite quote, by Ernest Hemingway: “Intelligent men are forced to drink in order to spend time with fools.”
If you are interested I also have a Best Buy pack of Twins Baseball Cards. Someday these’ll be worth somethin’. I know it.

So RandBall commenters, the question is this: What is the most random fun you have ever had at a sporting event?
