The Monday Meltdown with Big Daddy Drew

0000000000000000000000000000000000001meltdown.jpgAs usual, Big Daddy Drew, frequent contributor to Deadspin and Kissing Suzy Kolber (and soon-to-be-host of the exciting new cooking show “Meat Sweat Moans”) joins us to break down Sunday’s Vikings game. It was a little less verbose than usual, probably because there is far less to say when the team romps like it did vs. the 49ers.

RandBall: Kevin Williams is a ridiculous man. If we’re talking about Pro Bowlers on the defense, I say him, Pat W. and E.J. Henderson.

Big Daddy Drew: Yeah, I think E.J. has been the real surprise.  His first few years, he was a master at over pursuit, but now he’s become the tackling machine that he was at Maryland.  It’s really quite a turnaround.
RB: Trent Dilfer is still looking for his [redacted].

BDD: I don’t know what that means, but I agree!

RB: T-Jack was solid for a fourth consecutive game, particularly when it mattered.

BDD: Indeed.  Obviously, this wasn’t the stiffest competition, but the fact that he managed to make plays when Peterson got bottled up is something he wouldn’t have been able to do earlier in the year.  His improvement has been amazing.  When he was drafted, there was talk about how much he had to
learn.  But the fact that’s he’s improved at such a quick pace is extremely encouraging.

RB: Chester Taylor is up to 716 yards now; the Vikings could have a pair of 1,000-yard rushers this year.

BDD: And they likely will.  I don’t see that platoon going away, nor should it. With T-Jack playing well, attacking a defense with both backs has overwhelmed teams. And let’s give some dap to the wideouts and Jimmy Kleinsasser. They block their [redacted] off on run plays.

RB: Nice first-quarter challenge of the spot when the play is right in front of you, Nolan. He’s fighting Eric [redacted, of the Jets] for worst coach honors right now (field goal down by 5 with less than 2 minutes left? Really?)

BDD: Really? Cam Cameron doesn’t make your list?

RB: Minor concerns: The offensive line didn’t dominate like it has in weeks past; PJ was human — looked tentative and frustrated, which was the first time I’ve ever seen that from him; the whole team went on cruise control in the second half, and I don’t think they’re good enough to do that yet.

BDD: I agree.  I didn’t mind the off game from PJ.  The rest of the team made up for it by making big plays all over the place.  The second half inertia was kind of discouraging.  But it’s hard to quibble with a team that hangs a 27-0 lead before the half is even over. That’s three games in a row whre the Vikings have not only won, but DESTROYED the other team.  This might be the most surprising Vikings team ever.

RB: That said: 7-6 now, four victories in a row, in control of playoff destiny. Holy [redacted].

BDD: No [redacted].  Too many people are saying nice things about them.  I’m scared. Hold me.

I didn’t really watch the 2nd half so please fill me in. How do you not score at least a field goal in 30 minutes against the 49ers? Their D is what they call not that good.

I worry about next Monday’s game against the Bears. Feels like a trap game to me, unless AD decides that he’s going to pull a Moss and show everyone up on national TV.

Ryan: the last two games have felt like a trap game to me, and the combined final was 69-17, Purple. Years of experience have conditioned us to wait for the other shoe to drop, and it’s not dropping. At some point, you have to figure that it’s just not going to drop until they play a team that’s clearly better than them.

That team is not the Chicago Bears. And just like the last two weeks, I’m completely terrified about that. But maybe I shouldn’t be.

Re: Vick sentencing drawing on ESPN.com -

Was he really wearing black and white stripes like a convict in a 30’s movie?

I thought prison jumpsuits were orange or blue…guess I was wrong. I was kind of waiting to see a bag with a dollar sign on the side sitting on the table.

Stu

How dare you say the Bears are not better than the Vikings. Oh wait I was thinking back to 2006. Sorry you are correct, even if there are not much better they still get the nod.

I guess my mantra this week will be Trappity Trap Trap Trap Trap.

Division games down the stretch are always the most deadly, in football at least, unless you’re the Mets.

Will the Vikings horrible kick off team even give Devin Hester a whiff of returning a kick? I wonder if the Vikes will let Dwight Smith cover Hester one on one again on Monday?

Is anyone else having issues with the Strib’s homepage and website today? I know they have switched some things up so I don’t know if it is my computer or if it is something on their side of things.

I keep running across an ACCESS VIKINGS story that the Vikings are getting the Madden treatment in two weeks, so something must be wrong.

I like how all these national announcers know it alls are jumping on the (gag me) purple wagon. The first game they lose in the playoffs (they only need to lose one, duh) these same clowns who now say “watch out for those Vikings..boooooooo” will talk about Jackson’s collapse during a big game or how teams have learned to gang tackle Peterson.

That last point is pivotal since the 49ers were not ranked last in run defense nor were they well ranked either except for that sensational linebacker yet they shut Peterson down bigtime and other teams will surely be watching how that was done. To me, Peterson looked very hesitant even scared without his usual first quick step or aggressiveness. That often happens after injuries and he may not be the same this year particularly against much better defenses than the niners.
