The Internets: There’s, um, a game tonight

000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001mnf.jpgLest we forget that there is, indeed, football being played two blocks from our workplace tonight, we have been alerted to the fact that urine is already flowing freely in our normally safe and whiz-free parking lots. Some people just can’t enjoy football unless it is preceded by 5 hours of drinking. As such, we plan to be nowhere near the Metro-dome at gametime. We think you all know where we’ll be. Agenda: bowling doesn’t start until 9, though the list starts at 8:30. Watch the game, have some beverages and some food, then hit the lanes and do more of the same. That’s how we roll.

What else? Two deaths to report: Dan Fogelberg, pictured here looking a little bit like our dad circa 1981, passed away from prostate cancer. He was a singer/songwriter and he wrote some tunes we knew when we were 5 and could still probably recall today. Also, Tonya Harding’s thuggish bodyguard. Our guess was Nancy Kerrigan, in the parlour, with a skate blade, but the report says natural causes. Same thing, right?
Fanhaus asks, “What’s the deal with all these Red Sox undergarments on eBay?” It’s a fair question, and we return it with, “What’s up with your commenters?” They’re giving the ESPN comment of the day a run for the money.

Um.

Wait, there’s going to be public whizzing at the Randball anniversary party?

Goddamn.

Lizzy, that’s what the gutters were really made for.

I’m still blown away by how drunk people get for these Vikings games. I’m glad I won’t be driving home when they are. I’m pretty sure most of them aren’t taking cabs/buses/LRT. Scary. It probably helped that Liquor Depot closed. At least they don’t have a convenient place to grab another six 24-packs of yellow water when they get low.

I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m getting excited for the beverage/food/bowling/football combo.

Too bad the Steelers fan wasn’t a baseball fan–then he really could have been a fan to the end.

I can’t believe the NFL hasn’t signed up for that deal yet.

Did someone spill beer on the urn? If not, that guy suffered from “got no seats”.

I was wondering if you’d pay homage to the great Dan Fogelberg. Have y’all gotten your prostates checked lately? It’s what he would have wanted.

Have fun tonight - post pictures tomorrow, please.

RandBall gets no love in the Sports Blog NCAA Tourney…

Here’s how out of the loop I am up here: I had no idea the Liquor Depot was closed. That makes me kind of sad.

RE: Fogelberg. The textbook definition of “mellow gold.” Made Kenny Loggins sound like Slayer.

RE: the late Kerrigan whacker. Natural causes at age 40? That can’t be right.

Dave MN says:

December 17th, 2007 at 2:58 pm

Stu: The Liquor Depot closed when the lot it was on was purchased to be turned into a condo building. In fact, it is a series of six blocks of new condos right on Washington Ave. Nevermind that they won’t sell.

Also, the tailgate lot located behind Liquor Depot was turned into an amazing park right next to the Guthrie. That whole area looks entirely different than when Liquor Depot existed.

Anyone want to start tailgating at Park Tavern?

Dave MN says:

December 17th, 2007 at 3:08 pm

You know, the general populace at Park Tavern reminds me a bit of tailgating.

Stu says:

That whole area looks entirely different than when Liquor Depot existed.

I guess that’s progress, as the Depot looked like it could just as well have been in Sarajevo. Still, it’s hard not to have a soft spot for the place where one bought one’s first Partyball.

Dave MN says:

December 17th, 2007 at 3:08 pm

Also, where can I play the MNF Pinball Machine? I want to know.

Dave MN says:

December 17th, 2007 at 3:10 pm

Stu: You’re right, that whole area used to look like a war zone. Especially so after Vikings games when there would be gigantic piles of trash all over.

Lizzy says:

December 17th, 2007 at 3:12 pm

Wish I could be there guys, although there is a rumor floating around that I’m making my first trip to Minny in Feb.

Stu says:

If you do, here’s a Stu-based drinking game you can play:

5:00–Stu picks his two kids up from daycare, you drink twice.

5:30–Stu and kids get home and feeds them (beef roast that’s been in the slow cooker all day, thanks for asking), you drink shot of Beefeater or Wild Turkey.

6:00–Stu takes oldest child to Girl Scouts, you drink Dirty Girl Scout (that’s a shot, isn’t it?).

6:30–Stu’s lovely wife is supposed to be home from work by now, but will no doubt be late because I’d like to get on the road, you drink thrice because you can.

7:00–Stu passes the Albertville Outlet Mall, you drink a rail shot, none of that top-shelf nonsense.

Godspeed, and see you tonight.

With her build, athleticism and speed, Harding would have made a great safety. The Vikes need one, don’t they ? Sharper has become noticeably duller this year. Truth.

Stu

I didn’t know you were allowed to leave Stearns county.

I was going to make a joke about taking a dead Nazi but that might be bad timing for what’s going on at the old alma mater SCSU.

Dave MN says:

December 17th, 2007 at 3:41 pm

Stu: If I play your drinking game, you could probably convince me that I owe you all of my money once you arrive. Hell, I probably wouldn’t be able to pronounce my name…

I’ll be drinking Fat Tire tonight, which is somehow an “import”. Apparently, Colorado, California, and St. Paul all constitute other countries in the eyes of Park Tavern (Fat Tire, Summit, Sierra Nevada). A classy joint, this.

Paul Peter Paulos says:

December 17th, 2007 at 3:44 pm

I posted this in another place but it fits better here since it’s about the BIG game which will probably be a flop

Tonite … the vaunted Bear D tries, and succeeds, in stuffing Peterson BUT again all that attention on one guy makes Tavaris look “like he’s coming along” (a Pipress headline) so he then “shreds” the Bear dbs (who are playing close “in da box” covering A.D., remember) going 8 for 15.

The whole deal makes any fan not blinded by purple lights wonder what will happen when the Vikes take on a balanced team i.e. one with both a strong d and a q.b. not named Orton…

jama says:

December 17th, 2007 at 3:47 pm

I apologize in advance for not making the Redactular. I have a feeling if the Bears started winning you guys would all be wishing I wasn’t there anyway. Good luck to all, let me know who sucks the most at bowling.

Go Bears!!!!

P.S. Please make all participants drink one beer for me. I prefer Boulevard but feel free to substitue Natural Ice if you’d like.

Stu says:

December 17th, 2007 at 3:49 pm

David: is the Fat Tire tap or bottle?

Dave MN says:

December 17th, 2007 at 3:54 pm

Stu: If their web site is accurate, it’s bottles (I’m assuming the 22 oz. since the 12 oz haven’t seemed to make it here yet). They may have it on tap by now and haven’t updated the site though.

I used to go there more often when I lived across the street from the place, but now that it’s not right there, I tend to go other places.

Jama, I don’t know if they have either of your preferred beers (which are definitely on the opposite ends of the spectrum). You have very different goals for the night when you’re drinking Natty Ice as opposed to when you’re drinking Boulevard.

Stu says:

December 17th, 2007 at 3:54 pm

Better question: do they have coffee for those of us who need to cut ourselves off so they can drive home?

Dave MN says:

December 17th, 2007 at 3:56 pm

I’m pretty sure they have coffee, too.

Dave MN says:

December 17th, 2007 at 3:57 pm

Either that, or just drink Kahula…same thing.

Shifty McShifterson says:

No more Liquor Depot?! Ahhh, man, I’ve been gone too long. Please tell me Liquor Lyle’s is still rocking its metallic gold booths and serving pickled herring at Happy Hour (and who can forget Dolores O’Riordan’s twin serving Grain Belt buckets). IOW, I am (was?) a big fan of establishments in the form of Liquor _____.

Dave MN, 38 Pitches makes it but not Agent Zero?! That’s redacting bullredacted. I don’t like either blog, but the kids must like Agent Zero’s much more than that pompous ‘roid-headed jackact.

MNF in December down the street from Holidazzle?! Sigh, Seattle is fine and all (tho it’s parades absolutely suck) but I really wish I’d remember to use my WorldPerks miles once in awhile to return home.

jama says:

December 17th, 2007 at 4:04 pm

Dave

Those are the only two options for those attending. If they don’t have either one I expect you to bring a case of Naughty Natty with you to share with all on my behalf.

jama says:

December 17th, 2007 at 4:10 pm

Have Fun and Don’t do anything P3 wouldn’t do! God you guys better hope the Bears don’t win tonight.

And just incase you forgot

DA BEARS!!!
DA BEARS!!!
DA BEARS!!!

Paul Peter Paulos says:

December 17th, 2007 at 4:15 pm

Jama, that doesn’t leave them much to do except maybe wear those funky purple hats.

Stu says:

December 17th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

Shifty: speaking of Seattle and things closing, my Pacific NW sources are telling me the Crocodile Cafe closed its doors.

Dave MN says:

December 17th, 2007 at 4:28 pm

P3, I think Jama’s double-negative caught you…

Paul Peter Paulos says:

December 17th, 2007 at 4:31 pm

rite…never a detail person…I am instead a man of peace and wisdom…2 negatives would have overwhelmed me

Dave MN says:

December 17th, 2007 at 4:31 pm

Shifty: Liquor Lyle’s is still open, to my knowledge. Unless something changed very recently.

Those brackets are absolute garbage. There are only a few truly legitimate blogs on there and the rest are just on there because of their team fan base followings. Oh well, the weak will be cleared out after the first round. I just think it’s stupid that RandBall didn’t even get a sniff of a #16 seed.

Paul Peter Paulos says:

December 17th, 2007 at 4:36 pm

Dave, free speech ain’t …never has been..never will

Shifty McShifterson says:

Yup, the Croc closed yesterday. It wasn’t much of a shock. Inattentive owner, supposedly wasn’t making money since 2000, smallish, too long living on its grunge rep, several other clubs have opened/revamped and were killing them, one of the worst sufferers of Seattle’s anti-dance vibe, which thankfully is shifting to a more dance-friendly vibe.

It’s weird about the dance thing, when I got here in 2001, nobody danced. Ever. They all just stood and watched. And rare was it the band that didn’t accept the offer (to take the night off here before moving onto the more active crowds in Vancouver or Portland) and refuse to let the too cool for skool hipsters have their way.

Um, go Vikes.

Liquor Lyles is most definitely still open. Still home to 9 of the happiest happy hours in town, and rumor has it they still give you your first drink for free if you cash in an AA coin.
