Yes, we know it’s that kind of hard-hitting, think differently analysis that you love about this blog. But after last night’s gripping victory over the almost as inept Miami Heat (now featuring Ricky Davis on vocals, Mark Blount on the glockenspiel and Shaq in the oversized street clothes!) not only snapped an eight-game skid but also proved once and for all that Randy Wittman is no Roy Rubin. The infamous 1972-73 Philly squad that won just nine games was initially coached by Rubin, who led them to exactly four victories and a mere forty-seven losses. Yes, he was 4-47 before being canned. Indeed, please read from the linked piece:

He was a bad coach,” says Harvey Pollack, the 76ers’ longtime media-relations director and now the team’s statistics director. Pollack believed Rubin lacked the background to run an NBA team. Alan Richman, who covered the Sixers for the now-defunct Philadelphia Bulletin, figured 1972-73 would be rough. “They had nobody who could put the ball in the basket,” says Richman, alluding to the defection of Cunningham and his 23.3 scoring average, and the loss of Clark a year earlier in a trade with the Bullets. You knew they were going to be bad, but you had no idea they were going to be that bad.” The Sixers, whose roster included the likes of Manny Leaks, Jeff Halliburton, Mike Price, John Q. Trapp and Dave Sorenson, started the season 0-15 and later lost 20 consecutive games. With his record at 4-47, Rubin was replaced by Sixers player Kevin Loughery. The new coach inspired the troops to a 5-26 record and a .161 winning percentage, compared with Rubin’s .078 mark.“Anybody who looks at us wouldn’t believe I’ve coached a day in my life,” Rubin moaned before being dismissed.

Well, Randy Wittman is now 5-29 this year, positively not Rubin-esque, or even Rubenesque. (If you do nothing else, please follow that last link. You will not be sorry). Take that, Roy Rubin.

Thrice your fasola-link pleasure!

FYI: Not to steal Stu’s thunder, but we’re working on what could be the greatest Hunt Down ever, with an actual interview to boot. You can buy the entire seat, but you’ll only need the edge!
