Five things we’re thinking about

2. Someone should “lynch Tiger Woods in a back alley.” That’s what she said, and Kelly Tilghman won’t be saying much for a couple of weeks. Even if there wasn’t any ill-intent, the time off seems warranted. You just can’t say that.

3. Best nickname of 2008: Yoko Romo, for Jessica Simpson. Kevin Seifert reports to RandBall correspondents that Dan Patrick has picked up on that nickname and is using it on the air.

4. The double-amputee, having already received way too many breaks in life, will likely not be able to compete in Beijing. Sad.

5. Where can a guy get a good, reasonably inexpensive lunch downtown? We’re tired of the old fallbacks.

Tell us what the old fallbacks are, and we’ll go from there.

5. I would say El Burrito in the Northstar building, but I hear that might be no longer.

I’m partial to The Brothers Deli at 50 South 6th, but it’s questionable on the “reasonable” tag, and it’s Sid’s favorite deli, so you have to overcome that aspect.

Wasabi Fusion on Washington has great sushi prices, if you’re looking to go that route. It’s excellent.

If you’d like a great Japanese Bento Box lunch, try Zen Box Japanese Eatery, 6 Quebec Building, Skyway Level, 607 Marquette Ave., 612.341.3313; http://www.zen-box.com.

When I last worked downtown, my favorite lunch spot was Bombay Bistro’s lunch buffet.

The Erbert’s and Gerbert’s on 5th has excellent subs.

This is for RandBall’s St. Cloud readers. Yes, I realize I’m talking to myself.

Jon says:

January 10th, 2008 at 11:14 am

Nathan - You’re correct; El Burrito is closed.

Nathan says:

January 10th, 2008 at 11:15 am

Bah, in St. Cloud there’s only one choice - VAL’S!!!!

Stu says:

Kevin Seifert reports to RandBall correspondents that Dan Patrick has picked up on that nickname and is using it on the air.

Seifert later reported to ACCESS VIKINGS correspondents that THE DRAFT IS THREE MONTHS AWAY, LEAVE ME ALONE.

Jon, that is beyond sadness. The diablo pork and thai chicken peanut burritos were magical. Stupid Chipotle killing El Burrito.

Dave MN says:

January 10th, 2008 at 11:16 am

Go to Grumpy’s. Their food is relatively inexpensive. I don’t know if it’s “downtown” enough though.

Dave MN says:

January 10th, 2008 at 11:17 am

Thai chicken peanut burritos do sound magical…

I love when the blending of two types of food creates something amazing.

Stu says:

January 10th, 2008 at 11:18 am

Bah, in St. Cloud there’s only one choice - VAL’S!!!!

Absolutely. However,

1. It’s not downtown, but on St. Cloud’s historic (read: dumpy) East Side.

2. Val’s closes from Xmas to mid-January so Val can go to Florida.

But yes, I am now craving a sack of gutbombs with the orange-salted fries. Thanks a lot, Nathan.

1) Finally! Now maybe Reggie and the boys will get off my back about Florida!

2) Finally! Don Imus has found a mate!

3) Finally! Sports media has reached it’s journalistic pinnacle!

4) Finally! Proof that The “Modern” Olympics truly does embrace the spirit of sportsmanship and competition.

5) Finally! Randball is going to try Ike’s! Plenty to bring home to the Pug. Otherwise, Peter’s Grill.

LOVE Erbert’s and Gerbert’s. There used to be one downtown. Except it always felt wrong somehow to order the Boney Billy.

Greengirl says:

Rand,

Yoko Ono’s rep is rather overstated and undeserved (The Beatles were going to break up anyway). Her solo show at the Walker proved what a intelligent and talented artist she is (and was before she ever met John). You can hardly say the same about Jessica… She has difficulties spelling her own name…

PS: I’m currently writing a story on good skyway lunch places… Bombay Bistro is awesome.

Jon says:

January 10th, 2008 at 11:23 am

My favorite DT lunch spot might be the burger joint (IIRC, it might be called That Burger Place) that’s in the building south across 5th from the 5th Street Towers. Great burgers, and reasonably cheap, too.

If not that, there’s always Eddington’s (US Bank building). All-you-can eat soup & breadsticks is ho-hum, but unlike the Olive Garden, both are actually really, really, really good.

Nathan says:

January 10th, 2008 at 11:29 am

Jon, are you talking about the place with the amazing California Burger? High quality stuff, that.

It’s called The Burger Place and it’s at 501 Marquette.

My Burger at 6 Quebec is also very good.

Sorrento isn’t bad either.

I highly recommend that as well.

scagmajor says:

January 10th, 2008 at 11:35 am

What about the 310 Club, or whatever it’s called, near the new stadium site? I think they have a buffet. Oh, and naked girls.

Jon says:

January 10th, 2008 at 11:36 am

Sorrento is the Italian joint right next door to the Burger Place, right? Also good…

I would say that My Burger doesn’t even come close to comparing to The Burger Place, though. Don’t be fooled by the possessive pronoun - it should be Nobody’s Burger. :-)

RandBall says:

January 10th, 2008 at 11:39 am

Greengirl, you are correct on many fronts. I admire the *relative* cleverness of the name comparison more than anything. And I did see the Yoko show at the Walker and was impressed. In fact, I might have seen it with you? Am I making that last part up? Rings a bell.

As the resident downtown eating expert (3 years as a bike courier have earned me that distinction…)

1) Sorrentos inside the BNSF Building on Marquette and 5th St–best value in downtown with the $5.95 lasagna that is the size of your head and among the best italian food in the city. seriously.

2) That Burger Place (L. Phillips) Right next to Sorrentos. Great burgers.

3) Cheap Chinese. Right next to Sorrentos and L. Phillips. They have a lunch special for $3.10 after 1pm. Can’t beat the price.

4) Walking Dog located in the NorthStar Food Court on 7th St. and Marquette. They have a signed photo of their close personal friend Sid Hartman.

5) Zen Box Japanese Eatery (6 Quebec Building)Amazing food for skyway prices.

But, in your neck of the woods at the Strib building you should head over to Grumpy’s for the $5.95 Mock Duck Sandwhich.

Oooh, don’t tell the RBBH. That’s trouble brewing. And no matter how talented she is, or how much she wasn’t responsible for the break up of whoever these “Beatles” are, everything I’ve read/seen about her still made me think she was kind of a {redacted]. But I’ve been wrong once or twice before in my life.

Lunch: As Sah Wan (Ah So Good). Crappy chinese food at its best. I ate it so often when I worked downtown, I have no idea how I didn’t gain these 40 pounds until AFTER I stopped working downtown.

Stu says:

RE: Yoko. How your personality type/age affects how you feel about Yoko Ono.

Under 21: Yoko What? Is that like a Jag Bomb?

My Dad/KQRS listener: she sucks! Play some Creedence!

Hipster: Aw, she’s not that bad. Her music’s challenging, and her art is quite good. Plus, she inspired Lennon’s best solo stuff.

über-Hipster: She’s better than the Beatles ever were (note, you actually have to be in Sonic Youth to hold this opinion).

Greengirl says:

January 10th, 2008 at 12:01 pm

What the heck happened to your strib navbar? The font is all ginormous and stuff… Argh… I’ll fix it after I run downtown for lunch. That Burger Place sounds really tempting.

Greengirl says:

January 10th, 2008 at 12:04 pm

Thanks for backup Stu. Can you live in St. Louis Park and still be a hipster?

Stu says:

January 10th, 2008 at 12:15 pm

Greengirl: I’m a married father of two in Stearns County and I just referenced Sonic Youth, so yes, you definitely can.

Paul Peter Paulos says:

Looking at the Tiger Woods insults, and being accused before of being racist by my questioning of skewed genotypes in sport (a field unto itself), it’s disturbing that in these days of events far more pressing than sports (a Presidential election) that the enormous power of the media can be wielded to potentially sway that election. As in….Obama being both on Oprah and Tyra, Clinton on neither..
So, again as in my prior questions, there’s no racism involved here. Just this question, can differential exposure on huge national programs sway voters, and do these hosts have the right to showcase only their favorites ? Discuss…

super rookie says:

January 10th, 2008 at 12:44 pm

I think the entire downtown workforce reads Randball.

I just went to Sorrento’s and the line was out the door. My companinion and I decided to “settle” for L. Phillips (That Burger Place) for easily the best hamburgers in town.

Oh. “My Burger” blows chunks.

Git your righteous self on over to the Soo Line building!

AZGopherGirl says:

January 10th, 2008 at 12:46 pm

P3 - did you forget the other Clinton playing the sax on Arsenio? Think he wasn’t hoping that would sway voters?

Dave MN says:

January 10th, 2008 at 12:46 pm

P3, TV shows can’t just show their favorite candidates. I believe that they need to offer equal time to the candidates, and it’s up to each candidate to accept or reject that time.

I think some candidates choose not to go on particular shows because they stand to lose more than they gain if they are made to look foolish or are portrayed in a negative light.

Toonces51 says:

January 10th, 2008 at 1:00 pm

Dave - It’s been a while since I studied it in school, but I’m not sure that a show is required to give equal time–just the station.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal-time_rule

If memory serves, a show like Operah can choose to showcase a particular guest, but if a candidate requests, the station would be required to find some equal time for them, but not necessarily on the same show. I’m not sure on that, though.

I also am not sure if it applies for the prelims, or just for opposing political parties.

Personally, I wish the networks would find something other than the way too early caucases, Britney Spears, and the writers strike to talk about.

Dave MN says:

January 10th, 2008 at 1:02 pm

Toonces - you’re probably right. I was going off of a vague recollection of the rule.

Paul Peter Paulos says:

January 10th, 2008 at 1:14 pm

Dave, you may be right. I don’t know if Clinton or any Republican was offered a seat next to Winfrey (if there was room ;)…easy to jam her), or if they then turned it down. The problem isn’t then with the host or networks since they are only in it for the $$ anyway. The problem is us who equate celebrity endorsement, celebrities themselves, with intelligence, creativity you name it when the truth is these celebs, despite looking gosh darn perty, are likely pretty average people, but to simply outlaw celebrity endorsement has the stink of outlawing the Bill of Rights, however..

Paul Peter Paulos says:

January 10th, 2008 at 1:19 pm

It was alarming, nonetheless, when Oprah poured her time, money (I heard) and recognizability into one of Obama’s campaign swings. I know these celebs have rights too and can publicly back whoever they want, but they also have a responsibility to not fire up their squealing audiences (these women do..every day !) toward just one candidate. Personally, I’m not anything close to a Republican but I can’t imagine a Romney being invited for a Oprah love fest..
