Stu’s Huntdown: Chili Davis
Posted on January 11th, 2008 – 11:12 AMBy Michael Rand
Name: Chili Davis
Nickname: Wiki says he received the nickname “Chili Bowl” due to a bad haircut, and it was later shortened to “Chili.”
Claim to Fame, Minnesota: the designated hitter for your 1991 World Champion Minnesota Twins, Davis led the Twins in home runs and RBI with 29 and 93, respectively.
Claim to Fame, Everywhere Else: Davis was not a DH until he came to Minnesota. That was a good call. The Halos Heaven blog notes this about his fielding with the California Angels: Playing RF in 1988, he made 19 errors. If you wonder how a right fielder can make 19 errors, you never saw Chili Davis play right field. Imagine any possible error: that’s how he would make them. After leaving the Twins, Davis had a productive career DH-ing for the Angels, Royals and Yankees, and finished his career with 350 home runs, putting him 4th on the all-time list for HRs by a switch-hitter (Mantle, Murray, Chipper Jones).
Where He Is Now: remember your fondness for the ’91 Twins and how it kind of died a little when the Kirby Puckett revelations hit the media? Yeah, this next part isn’t going to help. Over to you, Arizona Republic:
As she waited in court for a jury to come back with a verdict, Tina Placourakis flashed back to the worst day of her life.
That was the day the man she loved attacked her while she was taking a shower, she said. There, in the place she should have felt safest, he knocked her to the floor and held her for seven hours, sometimes with a foot on her neck.
As she shivered on the tile, naked and curled in a fetal position, he spit tobacco chew on her, urinated in the drain next to her and humiliated her until he got what he wanted, which was for her to sign over the title of her car to him.
The him, of course, is Chili Davis. He was found guilty of assault and battery in civil court and ordered to pay $350,000 in damages. Happy Friday, everyone!
Glorious Randomness: according to Wiki, Davis’ favorite song is “No Tengo Dinero” by Los Umbrellos. In the linked video, Ron Jeremy shows up around the 1:55 mark. Of course he does.
