Wednesday (Rudy snubs Pack) edition: Wha’ Happened?

Posted on January 16th, 2008 – 8:09 AM
By Michael Rand

baby.jpgMitt Romney might have won the battle in Michigan yesterday, but it’s a fair bet that Rudy Giuliani picked up major ground in the key states of Minnesota and Illinois in his bid to gain the Republican nomination. How do we know this? Well, he did what any right-thinking person would do on a campaign stop in Florida: He refused to autograph a Green Bay Packers hat. Giuliani, a Giants fan, used the “bad luck” angle when approached by a fan, as the video shows. He is not shown stomping on the hat nor punching the fan in the face because those things did not happen. He also did not go on to explain that signing the hat would condemn him to an unpleasant hereafter, nor did he note that he couldn’t risk a paint thinner addiction this late in the race. Both of those things would have been well within his rights. That baby, by the way? No chance.

*(Via Deadspin), the headline of the year. Really, all it takes is a little common sense.

*Rowdy tennis fans? Awesome.

*The McLov-ometer officially hit this mark after a loss to Golden State. That’s winning percentage. That’s not good.

*On the other hand, Gophers men’s hoops lovers have been gearing up for a week like this for quite some time: two measuring stick games with a chance to see if this program is ready to get back into the Big Ten upper echelon conversation. Indiana and Michigan State, a pair of top-15 teams, are on the docket. Question: Are you sufficiently excited?

Randball, that’s a horrible picture. I assume the kids with more responsible adults now?

It’s no secret that I tilt left politically, but can I just say that Mitt Romney has awesome hair? I mean, Jesus, it’s beautiful.

RE: Gopher men’s hoops. I am enthused. Anyone know if both these games are Big Ten Network entities, or will folks have a chance to watch them in their own home?

(I left out the apostrophe as compensation for others who put them in too often)

Or, I could follow the link to the Medcalf story, and see that the IU game is on the WWL. Idiot.

Matthew, I did that yesterday with its/it’s, so I appreciate your thoughtfulness. I hate when I do that.

Wait…do the Gophers have a men’s basketball team? Why aren’t they on TV? Even pro beach volleyball is on TV, how can a major big ten program not be on TV?

Journalists, whether from backwater Chhampionship !! towns like Green Bay or New York City (which wouldn’t have covered this non-issue in the first place, love to justify their own jobs by coming up with inane title lines like “Giuliani disses Green Bay”. Truth is he could care less, but he very much would care about the voter backlash if he did sign. (Shows how shallow many voters are, ay, with wars breaking out in every third country around the globe we care about stuff like that) No, but what was Rudy Giuliani supposed to do ? Put on a # 4 jersey and be seen around the world then on the internet ? How embarrassing that must have been for that guy. Lucky he wore shades..

P3, some people fight wars over religion, money, or land, others fight over whose hat you sign. Are any of them really good reasons?

Thank God the authorities have stepped in to find more responsible role models for Brittany’s kids.

re: McLovins - I love this summary of last night’s game from the McLovins official site.

Minnesota scratched and clawed its way to a spirited effort Tuesday night at Target Center, but the talented Golden State Warriors had too much firepower in a 105-98 result.

We had to work hard just to put out a good effort. I love this team!

That’s aa good question for a preacher or philosopher. Yet being neither, I’d say no, that almost all wars are fought over perceived inequalities….inequalities over standard of living, perceived inequality over anything. That’s why I don’t believe Al Quaeda..fully..when they say this isn’t a war concerning a clash of material cultures i.e they must, to some degree, want what we have. Yet, I do think that it’s a religious clash, to be sure, but how could they not look at their newsreels at how we live and be jealous of how we live. “Who wants camel when you can have a Caddy” might make a good line for an ad.

Most wars are like that. Japan started off in China and then attacking us since they wanted free access to oil since they had little. So, to answer your question, there are no really good reasons for war, just good looking reason at the momement. Bush, at a 40 % citizen approval rating prior to 9/11 saw his chance to “jack himself up” by invading Afghanistan, a “good war”, but continued to then take out the tinpot dictator, Hussein, “a bad war”….So, the problem is the war makers are the ones who decide if the war is good and valid which fits the old analogy of Dracula running the Bloodbank..

I’m not signing any Packers hats either. So don’t bother asking. However, I will sign your drinking apparatus.

I believe the world wide leader will show Thursday’s game with Indiana at 8 pm central. As a Gopher fan in Portland I am mildly surprised and extremely pleased by this.

I don’t know who enjoys pain more, P3 for making an ass of himself day after day, or those who continue to prod him with direct questions that inspire his 300 wordvomits.

I, for one, want my funnel with a tube on the end signed by Roughkat. I’ll sell it on eBay.

And I’m excited to actually be able to watch the Gopher BB game in my own home. Stupid Big Ten Network. I still can’t believe that they took a WCHA game and showed it on their channel. St. Cloud State isn’t a Big Ten hockey team…and neither is Minnesota. You’re out of your jurisdiction BTN.

Does King Missile have more than one song?

I had a Packers hat once. I left it in my piece of work Ford Ranger (never could lock that truck, but it ran til nearly 200 grand). Anyway, someone stole the hat. I suspect it was a person with good taste..

Here’a a football prediction..sort of. I am assuredly a Packer fan….(”Don’t say so” says the chorus)..but I have just this one question. That is, from MSN Sports Odds to the man in the street or to that arrogant clown on KQ, why is everyone seemingly giving no hope to the Giants ? I mean Favre, the man from Canton himself, admits he hates the cold (and single digits anywhere is near the temp. of the IceBowl) and momentum meaning so much in any game with the Giants having tons of that, I think this game will be sloppy and full of dropped balls and fumbles, but to make it sound like a Pack/Pats Superbowl is a sure thing is nonsense. I, of course, want that, but I’ve played on enough teams to know that predicting success is often a guarantee of failure. Personally, I feel underdogs fare better…

Paul Peter Paulos says:

Dano, I thought Dave’s question to be right on, accurate and difficult to answer. Whole theses have been advanced to answer ….”some people fight wars over religion, money, or land, others fight over whose hat you sign. Are any of them really good reasons?”….But, how would you answer it…in any number of words, and what is your problem now with ol’ P3…

Let’s remember that Giuliani was the guy that, despite being a Yankees fan, said he’d be cheering for the Red Sox in the World Series.

That right there is sufficient basis for the awarding of no points and may God have mercy on your soul.

Stu says:

January 16th, 2008 at 11:48 am

I was going to say that 91u1iani getting less than half the votes of Ron Paul and barely edging out Uncommitted was a sufficient basis, but your example is better, Jon.

Paul Peter Paulos says:

January 16th, 2008 at 12:01 pm

Jon, I don’t know if it was some comedian or a politician ( is there a difference ?) who recently said everything Giuliani says has three elements to it…a noun, a verb and “9/11″ in it. To me giving the guy a ton of credit concerning his handling of NY post 9/11 is really misplaced considering going down to Ground Zero everyday or as often as he did was his job !! So, he did his job, but is that a qualification to lead a nation …
showing up for work, that is ?

Jon says:

January 16th, 2008 at 12:31 pm

P3 - That was Sen. Chris Dodd.

I, Dave MN, think that showing up to the job is a key component of being President. I may be way off base, though. I think we should go through every candidate’s job attendance record from when they were in high school up until today. Then, and only then, will we know who to vote for.

Dave MN says:

January 16th, 2008 at 2:44 pm

Man, that kid’s got some goofy P3jama’s on.

Toonces51 says:

I agree, Dave (on both of your last two posts). That’s one thing that has always irritated me about presidential elections–most of the candidates are blatantly ignoring the jobs that they were elected to do (in the house or senate or as governor) to pursue the election. And that’s supposed to make me want to vote for them?

Paul Peter Paulos says:

Dave , I slip off into a painkiller induced nap and wake to find myself jammed again !! I’m changing my name to P4. No one will suspect..
