The Internets: Basketball at Mariucci?

mariucci.jpgIn case you missed it, prep ace John Millea had this interesting tidbit in today’s paper: some of the state high school boys’ basketball tournament is going to be played at Mariucci Arena. Why? Williams Arena was booked for a robotics convention. We can’t recall basketball ever being played at Mariucci, unless you are willing to count the time a young Nick Checco fired a wad of tape of Brian Bonin’s shin guard and into a locker room garbage can.

*Hard to tell what was worse: The Paulus flop, or the announcers’ reaction. Really, really tough call. Then again, Duke can do no wrong. That’s why everyone loves them.
*Apropos of nothing, as we walked the pug this morning we decided to try to think of long-forgotten NFL players. The first name that popped into our head? Vann McElroy. No idea why.

*There are some words you can’t say on TV. Or at least FOX. That is TV, right?

*Bud Selig extended.

If Boogaard can have a fighting camp can’t Vlade Divac has a flopping camp? I think Paulos might be a counselor. He is actually more of a d-bag than his brother.

Also how can McElroy be a 4 time All-Pro but only make the Pro-Bowl 2 times? How can you be an All-Pro but not a Pro-Bowler?

Loving that pic of old Mariucci.

This basketball-at-Mariucci thing nearly happened at least once before. I believe the reason was that Gopher women’s basketball nearly earned an unexpected home NCAA tournament weekend, which would have pushed one of the high school tournaments out of Williams and into Mariucci.

A contingency plan was hurriedly drafted to move the hoops to Mariucci, and I would imagine that this year’s plan is similar. It is a rather, shall we say, INVOLVED process to convert from one to the other.

However, part of the problem was that Mariucci couldn’t ditch the ice because of hockey dates; they were going to have to borrow the insulated floor from the Xcel Center and fill in the gaps (the rinks are different sizes.) The Gophers will be long cleared out of Mariucci by the time the basketball tourney rolls around this year, so it’s just a matter of taking down the glass and trucking in a floor this time around.

I apologize it must have been a Freudian slip. I was actually talking about Greg Paulus’s brother Ron. I had a typo but I guess it could still work out. It was not meant as a cheap shot at you but I guess that is how it looked.

Really, if that is so, apology accepted, but that name “Paulos or Paulus or Paulose” is all over up here. I mean I’ve lived in NY and Chicago + other places with no other Pauloses around. Now here there are 3 ! Anyway, that’s the Greek spelling, Paulus is almost always German and Paulose, I don’t have a clue where she is from. Is any of this important ? Of course not, but it just crossed my mind…but who is this “Ron” fellow ?

There is a link to Paulus flopping, his brother Ron was a heisman tropy winner(If I had any skills, this is where you cross out the word winner, thank you very much Beano Cook, and enter never even a finalist)

I don’t know why, but I’ve always liked Lincoln Kennedy. I was disappointed to Wiki him and learn his real first name is Tamerlane. Not as cool if you weren’t born with it. (Next thing you know, roughkat is really Rupert.)

AZGG: Roughkat’s real name? Thorn Savagewood. He likes to keep it on the QT, so just be careful who you tell.
