Weekend links with Jon Marthaler

There is no football on Sunday.
There is no football today, either, unless you’re one of the misguided souls that actually likes watching the Senior Bowl. (If so: how much ARE the dues for the Mel Kiper Fan Club, anyway?). It may be the weekend, but not in the way we’ve come to think of weekends. The cold winds of winter blow that much harder when there’s no football on the tube. We’ll get through it, I suspect, but I don’t quite know how. Onto the links:
*From Awful Announcing: I have no idea what Scott Van Pelt and John Buccigross are talking about. And maybe I don’t care. If you could guarantee me that SportsCenter would be
this amusing on a regular basis, I might actually watch it again. Also you would have to promise me that I wouldn’t have to deal with the ever-mounting Salisbury-Clayton tension that is “Four Downs,” but otherwise I’d watch for sure.
*If you like Chuck Klosterman, you will love this week’s “E-Ticket” on ESPN.com. Mostly because Klosterman wrote it.
*For the three or four of you that have the Big Ten Network: Gopher Nation has the detailed breakdown of today’s Minnesota-Ohio State Big Ten hoops tilt. For those of us who can’t watch the game, I have nothing to offer, so here’s a video of people falling down.
*Patrick Reusse likes the Morneau and Cuddyer signings. Aaron Gleeman’s not quite so sure. Like most everyone else, I don’t quite know what the right answer is, and so I’m planning to stay quiet until 2011 or so, when I can say either “I knew this was a great move all along!” or “I knew these guys were bums all along.” Hindsight: Still #1.
*Today’s technology news: apparently, the people at the US Patent and Trademark Office haven’t been outside since about 1973. Tomorrow, I plan to submit my patent for “a regularly updated, electronically accessed journal containing news about sports and related topics.” Deadspin, EDSBS, and especially RandBall — the lawsuits will be in the mail soon. Tremble before the stupidity of the USPTO!
*And finally: the funniest clip in the history of communication!
That’ll do it for me; feel free to get your Saturdays started now. Basketball! That’ll cure the no-football blues.
[Proprietor note: We participated in a podcast the other day with the good folks at Flak Radio (an extension of Flak Magazine). We’re not going to make you listen to the entire thing, but here is probably the best three minutes in which we had a part: three guys talking about the weather with an isolated David Lee Roth vocal track from “Running With the Devil” interspersed].

Signing Morneau and Cuddyer don’t mean a thing if we can’t keep Santana. All that will happen without Johan is that we will lose alot of games by the score of 8-7 and 9-8.
Oh, Danny Boy. Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh Danny.
Where’s Gladys ?
According to the FlakMag podcast, we have been “cultivated” by RandBall. I’m not sure how to feel about that.
Seriously who kidnapped the real McHale and Wittman? What is going on with this team? I sure hope somebody tells them that they lose when they win.
