A somber note: 50-year anniversary of ManU crash

It’s a story that, frankly, we didn’t know much about until we got sucked into this video and this article: Tomorrow marks the 50-year anniversary of a tragic plane crash that eventually claimed the lives of 23 people, including 8 Manchester United soccer players. Tomorrow figures to be an emotional day for many folks — five in particular. From the above linked story: The clock at Old Trafford Stadium remains permanently frozen at 3:04 p.m. on Feb. 6, 1958. The solitary word beneath it is Munich. Lest anyone forget, that was the time and date when a plane carrying the Manchester United team crashed on takeoff from Munich’s airport, decimating the famous Busby Babes but helping to create the legendary status that, to this day, makes United the best-known soccer club on earth. On Wednesday at 3:04, the five players from that disaster who are still alive will commemorate its 50th anniversary at Old Trafford. They are Bobby Charlton, Bill Foulkes, Harry Gregg, Kenny Morgans and Albert Scanlon.
And we’ll leave it at that.

Today’s credit to the Internet: you will have major difficulty attempting to Google the lyrics of some of the infamous songs that Man City and Liverpool supporters sing, even now, fifty years on.
Probably not the right place or time to mention this, but did anyone else just hear Sid Hartman on the 5:00 Sports Center? He was actually interviewing Bobby Knight on WCCO radio and he scooped the first sound clip. I’m telling you these two have a forbidden love of some sort. But good for Sid, except for the fact that he always sounds like he’s already had about a 6 pack no matter what time of day it is.
Reports are saying that the Heat are looking to trade Shaq and that they have been talking to the Suns about a Marion and Banks for Shaq deal. Pretty interesting. I completely stole this from ESPN SportsCenter.
Long live the Busby Babes!
“Munich Air Disaster” - Morrissey
We love them
We mourn for them
Unlucky boys of Red
I wish I’d gone down
Gone down with them
To where Mother Nature makes their bed
We miss them
Every night we kiss them
Their faces fixed in our heads
I wish I’d gone down
Gone down with them
To where Mother Nature makes their bed
They can’t hurt you
Their style will never desert you
Because they’re all safely dead
I wish I’d gone down
Gone down with them
To where Mother Nature makes their bed
Unrelated note: Man charged with threatening Hennepin Co. commissioners. He did this because they supported a Twins stadium. For a second I thought it might have been Nick Coleman but it didn’t say anything about a limp wristed slap.
Just think how tragic this event would have been if it would have been non soccer fans and players. Fortunatly, nobody cares about soccer.
Fred, it’s not a big deal here, but over there it’s enormous. Biggest tragedy in European sport according to many.
