The joke was that aging linebacker Zach Thomas would be a perfect fit for the Patriots, who love old linebackers more than, um, cougars. Turns out it wasn’t just speculation and a laugh at everyone’s expense. It’s true. From the Miami Herald (which is also reporting the Patriots are after Marty Booker):

The New England Patriots offered Zach Thomas a contract Monday on the same day the former Dolphins linebacker made Gillette Stadium his first stop in what promises to be a continuing free agency tour. ”We had a great visit in New England,” agent Drew Rosenhaus wrote in a text message Monday evening. “They offered him a contract and we will continue negotiations.”

No word yet on whether the Patriots have any secret footage of Thomas working out. Hey-o!

Why does Zach Thomas have a square head?

Looks like he’s plenty white to be a Patriots fan favorite.

Does Thomas have a nickname? If not, doesn’t Caveman fit well?

Maybe Zach Thomas has a square head because he has been hanging with the Rocket?

His head and face are almost cartoonish.

I think his face is flat in part due to being run over when he was a kid. And I’m not even kidding, although I can’t find an article to back it up.

Oh, I feel bad now that I said his head and face are cartoonish.

From Wikipedia:
“Thomas’ father is millionaire Steve Thomas who constructed the largest cross in the Northern Hemisphere; this cross is located between Interstate 40 and old Route 66 west of Groom, Texas.”
